James City County’s General Services Department seeks an individual to perform responsible work maintaining the appearance of grounds for various facilities including cutting grass, repairing damaged lawns, pruning trees and shrubs, applying horticultural chemicals and securing areas for public safety in emergencies.
There are three levels of Landscape Maintenance Worker distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.
Landscape Maintenance Worker I - $15.76 / hour or higher DOQ Landscape Maintenance Worker II - $16.83 / hour or higher DOQ Landscape Maintenance Worker III - $17.98 / hour or higher DOQ Responsibilities:

(Construction Maintenance Worker II/III) Applies horticultural pesticides; operates various types of mowing equipment and small handheld powered equipment; operates one or more types of sophisticated equipment used in maintaining stormwater facilities and/or grounds maintenances areas.
(Construction Maintenance Worker III) Serves as Crew Lead as needed; operates heavy equipment requiring a Commercial Driver’s License; applies seed, fertilizer and pesticides to athletic fields, roadway medians, landscaped beds and other turfgrass areas.
Requirements
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma; some experience in the methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in grounds maintenance work as needed to maintain gardens, building grounds and paved areas.
Must possess, or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County criteria.

As a Park Ranger 1, you'll be on the front lines of visitor services, park operations, and maintenance. You’ll perform:
Visitor Services & Park Safety and Rule Enforcement
Use online reservation system to register and process campsite reservations
Accept and process payments for park services
Provide information about local attractions and Oregon Parks, park rules and regulations to visitors
Patrol park areas and facilities, checking for misuse, undesirable activities and hazardous situations, and take appropriate action
Inspect park grounds, buildings, facilities and equipment for safety hazards and possible violations, and take appropriate action
Maintain vehicles, work sites, buildings, maintenance shops, yards and storage areas in clean, safe condition
Explain park rules and regulations to park visitors and seek voluntary visitor compliance with park area rules and regulations; issue verbal and written warnings as necessary
Landscape and Custodial Maintenance
Plant vegetation; mowing lawns and irrigating plants and lawns
Maintain irrigation systems and equipment including pumps, timers, pipes and wires and valves
Prune trees and shrubs using manual and power tools, as well as apply fertilizers and pesticides
Clean park facilities including restrooms, showers, maintenance shops, and interpretive centers etc.
Ensure supplies are stocked in restrooms, collect garbage and recycling, clean fireplaces etc.
Building & Facility Maintenance and Construction
Maintain and repair plumbing systems (unclogging toilets, repairing sinks, toilets, pipes etc.)
Maintain, repair and construct buildings or structures requiring basic carpentry skills, painting, and the use of hand and power tools
Maintain and repair electrical systems (replace fuses, reset circuit breakers etc.)
Construct, maintain and restore hiking trails, footbridges, footpaths, parking areas, using hand and power tools
Construct, maintain and repair park signs, water fountains, tables, fireplaces, wastewater disposals, etc.
Additional Duties Include
Utility System Maintenance and Construction
Resource conservation and interpretation
Minimum Qualifications:
(a) Two (2) years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
OR (b) An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).
What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):
Experience in rule advisory and enforcement.
Experience in grounds maintenance.
Successful completion of a Chainsaw Operators Certification.
Commercial janitorial experience
