Job Description:


A Senior Technologist I, processes and cryopreserves Cellular Therapy products both in a laboratory and in a cleanroom (GMP manufacturing). Performs testing on all Cellular Therapy products as well as other Contract Manufactured blood products. Testing may include, but not limited to the following: CBC (automated cell counts), viability, manual differentials, Flow Cytometry Assays, bacterial cultures, Endotoxin, bacterial gram stain, Osmotic Fragility. Products may include, but not limited to the following: Peripheral Blood Progenitor Cells (HPCs), Mononuclear cells (MNC), Packed Red Blood Cells (pRBC).

Schedule flexibility is required due to the nature of our business.

Is familiar with all procedures and methods used in the Cellular Therapy Laboratory.

Assists in the development of new written procedures or revisions of current procedures, as required to meet departmental needs.

Assists in the development of new assays, as required to meet departmental needs.

Is familiar with the requirements of maintaining a GMP/GLP environment.

Education and Experience:

Must meet one of the following requirements:

1. MT (ASCP) or equivalent -- 2 years laboratory experience required, preferably in Blood Banking and Hematology
2. MLT (ASCP) – 4 years laboratory experience, preferably in Blood Banking and Hematology
3. BS – 2 years tissue culture/research experience preferably in a GMP environment
4. Other experience of special value to the Red Cross Cellular Therapy Laboratory

B. Job Knowledge and Skills

1Preferable but not required: should have comprehensive knowledge of basic blood component processing and general blood bank techniques, as well as, stem cell processing techniques and principles; knowledge of basic hematology, i.e reading of manual differentials, cell counting methods (both automated and manual). Other experience/knowledge helpful but not required: flow cytometry, tissue culture techniques.

Must be able to recognize problems and determine solutions.

Must have excellent communication skills to solicit information, teach and communicate problems and ideas.

Must have excellent math skills.

Must be able to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Access.

Must have excellent aseptic technique and be able to work in a GMP environment (Class 10,000 clean room).

Must be able to work independently.

Must be flexible in hours and work habits, adaptable to new procedures, able to work with Cellular Therapy staff in a close environment. Overtime and weekends may be required, as well as, participation in on-call rotation.
