To support our mission, we seek a Grants Analyst to join our team in Reston, VA.
The Grants Analyst will serve as a liaison for restricted revenue and grant award management for the finance department in their assigned area(s). The position is generally accountable for effectively providing financial management, financial and narrative reporting, analysis, and communication for NWF grants through a collaborative effort with the Philanthropy department, Conservation and Education programs, Finance and other internal staff throughout the organization. Program assignments and terms may vary depending on priorities.
In this role you will:
Manage and track all restricted revenue sources excluding government grants within the assigned departments which includes:
- Monitoring appropriate financial and reporting systems, such as Lawson, iBudget and FileMaker, to ensure accurate and up-to-date information. Serve as point person to review, code, and track all grant revenue and monitor such expenses for programs. Ensure highly accurate and timely monthly reprojections are completed in iBudget in the monthly closing process. Manage year-end process of recording and reconciling revenue with program staff and Finance. Working with the Sr. Grants Analysts and Sr. Director of Finance to ensure year end journal entries are prepared accurately and timely.
- Responsible for the coordination between Program, Philanthropy, and Finance departments in preparing and reviewing budget proposals for grants. Once grant funds have been secured, monitor all revenue and expenses related to grant funded programs. Responsible for creation, communications and training for the activity codes in iBudget (NWF's budgeting and reporting tool). During the annual budgeting process, coordinate the restricted revenue portion of the new budget by communicating with Philanthropy and program managers to accurately reflect known and anticipated restricted revenue sources.
Ensure accurate and timely reporting to donors and analysis for departments and management:
- In coordination with program directors, Philanthropy, and Finance, produce and submit financial reports as required by donors or auditors related to grant funds or grant funded program work. Ensure that reporting adheres to the requirements of the funders both in content and deadlines as well as that it matches financial information tracked in various systems within NWF, should audits need to be made.
- Serve as liaison between Conservation and Education programs, Philanthropy, and Finance in addition to any other departments regarding the tracking, compliance, and information flow related to grant funded programs. Recognizing informational needs for each department at various stages in the grants process (from budget creation to report submittal).
Other duties as assigned
- Produce journal entries as needed for restricted revenue. Enter grants into the restricted revenue database in FileMaker and CAL-FINRR calendar. Assist with annual Audit schedules related to restricted revenue and schedules for annual 990.
- B.S. or B.A. in Accounting or Finance or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of financial nonprofit experience, preferably in Finance or Philanthropy related to grants operations, with some overlap in program work.
- Experience with environmental education, conservation issues, Lawson or other financial software a plus.
- Demonstrable skill in creating and tracking budgets and expenses
- Ability to manage diverse groups of people around a purpose, as well as work well independently
- Knowledge of nonprofit financial reporting requirements, strong financial analysis and presentation abilities
- Understanding of donor/nonprofit relationships
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to communicate financial concepts to non-financial professionals
- Attention to detail and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy
- Must consistently meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of databases, preferably FileMaker and Essbase.

There will be minimal travel in the DC metro area, and travel outside of the area is not expected to exceed three times per year.
