The ACLU is seeking a Director of Strategy and Innovation to manage the critical recruitment functions of a best in class human resources operation and program that establishes a new standard in non-profit human capital management.  Reporting directly to the Chief People Officer (CPO), the Director of Strategy and Innovation will be a member of the Human Resources (HR) senior leadership team responsible for developing key programs and initiatives for a growing employee base of over 500 people across multiple national office locations, as well as for an extended universe of constituents that includes prospective candidates, current and former interns and Fellows, and ACLU alumni.  The Director of Strategy and Innovation will be responsible for seeking out and establishing new and innovative strategies for outreach and recruitment that will drive meaningful investments in pipeline development and stakeholder engagement that enables the ACLU to deliver on its commitment to attract and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce – advancing the broader mission and strategic goals and priorities of the organization.  The Director of Strategy and Innovation will apply the same lens of innovation and creativity to internal HR processes and practices that will enable ACLU’s HR team to set industry standards in human capital management.




  • Manage the execution of a new HRIS platform with a delivery goal of end of 2018 calendar year; produce and maintain a project plan with key deadlines and deliverables
  • Serve as principal project lead and liaison to key internal and external stakeholders
  • Develop an internal communications and launch plan for HRIS platform implementation
  • Engage key cross-functional stakeholders across the organization to ensure alignment and investment


  • Develop an ambitious strategic plan for recruitment and outreach that reflects in external goals, ACLU’s internal values, especially around equity, diversity, and inclusion; lead implementation of strategic plan for recruitment and outreach
  • Establish a robust program for pipeline investment and development – this includes developing and sustaining an internship and fellowship program (with support from other members of the HR team in administration of programs)
  • Leverage data and analytics to assess and measure ACLU’s hiring trends; dissect and interpret data to inform recruitment focus
  • Assess ways in which hiring materials and processes, as well as outreach, can be improved to keep pace with advancements in tech/social/digital communications; develop new systems and ensure standards are applied consistently
  • Think creatively about new and improved ideas, opportunities, insights to expand ACLU’s ongoing efforts to attract and retain top talent across departments, at all levels of staff, and between national offices; do the same for general internal and external HR functions
  • Build and cultivate strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders and partners, serving as an ambassador for HR and the ACLU to strengthen the ACLU’s reputation as a non-profit leader
  • Serve as a thought partner to the CPO on annual strategic planning exercises, which includes the development of metrics and key performance indicators across HR functions to set goals and objectives, and measure results
  • Some travel may be required



  • Meaningful, demonstrated experience in advisory and/or leadership roles, particularly in human capital management/people operations space
  • Demonstrated track record in complex project management and cross-functional project facilitation
  • Experience designing and implementing best in class, state of the art HR systems a plus
  • Bold, creative, strategic thinker who is self-motivated, possessing the ability to operate as well independently as part of a team
  • Strong analytical and reasoning skills, including the ability to collect and analyze data, and develop reports and other public communications that are clear and cogent
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; considerable public presentation, meeting facilitation, and stakeholder management skills a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated track record of success in complex, fast paced work environments with ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail and ability to exercise a high level of discretion
