Job Description:

The American Red Cross is in search of a Program Management Guru, with great communication skills to support our Disaster Cycle Services (DCS) department with the Logistics group. This position operates in support of the processes of Respond and Recovery, which are two of the three core processes of the Disaster Management Cycle. It supports two of the five pillar processes—Deploy Materials and Technology and Engage Volunteers and Employees. Specific functions of this position include: material inventory requirements, program support, program development, resource requirements projection, metrics and process improvement. Drivers for this work include: structure and capacity of field, complexity and range of programs and relief operational activity. This position is located in Disaster Logistics within the Disaster Operations and Logistics unit of the Disaster Cycle Services department. This is an emergency management position and requires participation in relief operations leadership either at NHQ or at various locations as required. The position reports to the Director, Disaster Logistics Support who provides direction and personnel development.


  • Provides logistics operations and programmatic support to disaster relief operations and regions.
  • Monitors and supports the implementation of large-scale disaster relief operation processes and systems for managing inventory and supporting disaster relief operations warehousing.
  • Monitors the acquisition and tracking of deployed assets on large disaster relief operations.
  • Ensures materials, goods, labor, equipment and supplies are delivered, utilized and maintained to ensure effective and economical support to service delivery activities.
  • Produces reports on material delivery of products going to disaster relief operations.
  • Maintains the systems, processes, training content and tools to support the overall direction and established program standards and service delivery metrics.
  • Ensures defined program processes are disseminated and operate according to a continuous improvement process.
  • Processes the payments of invoices in support of disaster relief operations.


  • Bachelors degree in Logistics Management or related field or equivalent years of experience in lieu of degree.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant work experience preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, written and oral.
  • Knowledge of technology in logistics resources and methods.
  • Knowledge of Red Cross disaster policies and procedures preferred.

Essential Functions/Physical Requirements

Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential. May include sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.

Work Conditions:

Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services

relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout chapter jurisdiction, state and Red Cross system. Because the Red Cross is a disaster response organization, staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during period of major disaster.
