Position Title : Development Director

We are seeking an energetic and highly organized Development Director to implement our development plan. This is a key role in helping to grow the organization. The successful candidate will be analytical and creative, collaborate well with a passionate and fun staff, and coordinate and manage multiple projects. Essential Functions: Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Development Director (DD) will provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, evaluation, integration, and administration development department. The DD will lead a team of development professionals in achieving the organization’s revenue goals, increasing income, and educating and engaging more individuals and institutions in the to advance the organization’s mission. The DD will be part of a skilled team of professionals working to raise at least $5 million annually. The DD manages a multi-faceted fundraising program; central to this role will be prioritizing personal solicitation of major donors, events, online and direct marketing, and foundation fundraising.
Duties:
Work closely with the Development Team to establish fundraising goals, set strategic priorities, advise on program development, and develop and meet annual budget
Manage and build a growing team of development professionals, provide on-going guidance, direction, and motivation, hire team members and provide oversight to consultants as needed, delegate appropriately and ensure strong internal communication and coordination, and evaluate performance and provide opportunities for personal and professional growth
Work closely with the Boards of Directors to engage them more deeply in the fundraising process and to help cultivate a strong relationship between board members and the organization
Help track cultivation and prospecting activity and ensure the execution of action items
Solicit contributions from major individual donors and steward long-term relationships with donors
Develop relationships with prospective individual and foundation donors to increase funding
Research prospective institutional and individual funders
Work with internal partners to draft and edit proposals and reports
Track proposal and reporting deadlines, ensure that all submitted materials are accurate and comply with any funder requirements
Manage all grant activity in a central database and deliver regular reports to the Executive Director
Serve as the point person for management and maintenance of funders database and ensure efficient system utilization across all units
Oversee the implementation of ongoing programs to improve the renewal rates of existing annual donors, creatively use events to upgrade donors and maintain a diversity of revenue
Work with the VP of Operations to develop annual budgets and income projections
Stay abreast of political and philanthropic trends and ensure that Board and staff are informed of changes in legislation and other trends and initiatives that might impact giving
Competencies:
Experience in fundraising and achieving corporate s;ponsorships
Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles
Excellent management and supervisory skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Expertise in conducting research for potential donors
Skills in conducting analysis and industry trends
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree plus 7+ years fundraising experience
Proven success in securing foundation and individual donor support
Experience managing a team, including experience in creating and managing successful major gifts programs
A clear understanding of 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) nonprofit legal issues/structures.
Well-developed writing, interpersonal and organizational skills and experience managing staff
Commitment to organization’s mission and understanding of current policy issues and political landscape
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with, and quickly gain the respect and support of, various constituencies, including a visible chief executive committed to raising money, established development management team, active board members, other senior leadership, program directors and donors.
Experience as an effective communicator who is articulate and persuasive in both the spoken and written word; must be adept at crafting materials and making presentations to a variety of audiences
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position has supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment: This job operates in a typical office setting. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a permanent full-time position. This position regularly requires long hours and frequent weekend work.
Travel Requirements: This position has frequent travel throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
Salary Range: $85,000-$100,000/year
Commensurate according to years of experience. All employees must meet a 6-month probationary period. Continuation of this position after one year is dependent on the successful candidate meeting jointly determined performance goals.

Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Institutional Giving, the Senior Director of Institutional Giving is an important member of the Development department and will help support American Progress’ Institutional Giving efforts as we look to grow and diversify our revenue streams from institutional partners, including private and family foundations, corporations, and labor organizations. Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Institutional Giving, the Associate Director or Director of Institutional Giving is an important member of the Development department and will help support American Progress’ institutional giving efforts as the organization works to grow and diversify its revenue streams from institutional partners, including private and family foundations, corporations, and labor organizations. This individual will be responsible for a grant-seeking portfolio that generates $7 million to $15 million in annual revenue for American Progress. They will pursue and capitalize on emerging opportunities for institutional funding and will help produce written communications for the organization. Working closely with executive and senior American Progress staff, they will contribute to a robust institutional fundraising program designed to increase the amount of support from the organization’s constituency over the next several years.

Summary
Reporting to the Managing Director of Institutional Giving, the Associate Director or Director of Institutional Giving is an important member of the Development department and will help support American Progress’ institutional giving efforts as the organization works to grow and diversify its revenue streams from institutional partners, including private and family foundations, corporations, and labor organizations. This individual will be responsible for a grant-seeking portfolio that generates $7 million to $15 million in annual revenue for American Progress. The Institutional Giving team works with program staff at both the Center for American Progress, a 501(c)(3) organization, and the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a 501(c)(4) organization, to make the case for support for various programs; conduct ongoing research to identify foundation funding opportunities; collaborate on strategies for approaching foundation prospects; and track all foundation activity and deadlines.
Responsibilities:
Independently generate $7 million to $15 million in revenue on an annual basis through management of a portfolio of 15 to 25 institutional donors and prospects at the six- to seven-figure level.
Design and implement strategies and activities to increase the level of funding from existing institutional donors as well as to shift the scope of funded efforts to align with the organization’s crosscutting priorities and minimize restrictions.
Identify new potential foundation support, working closely with the Managing Director of Institutional Giving and executive and senior leadership to drive fundraising strategy.
Lead cross-functional collaborations to secure less restricted, more flexible support for multidisciplinary projects led by members of the Executive department and senior leadership; ensure high-quality stewardship of these collaborative grants by facilitating intra-organizational planning and coordination to meet grant deliverables.
Research the giving interests of foundation funders and stay abreast of philanthropic trends and recent foundation giving.
Work closely with the Institutional Giving Coordinator to identify new opportunities for funding that align with American Progress’ programs through prospect research.
Prepare donor materials, including but not limited to proposals, letters of inquiry, grant reports, agreements, emails, presentations, and acknowledgment letters. This includes drafting original copy, editing, and formatting as needed.
Lead the planning and execution of meetings with institutional donor staff; provide strategic guidance on research and draft briefings for executive leadership in advance of donor meetings; and prepare senior staff for donor meetings and phone calls.
Partner with American Progress policy staff and senior leadership to cultivate relationships with both current and prospective donors and support foundation fundraising on behalf of American Progress’ Executive department.
Track grant requirements and deadlines as well as contact between American Progress and funders.
Liaise with finance staff to monitor grant spending.
Perform other duties as assigned or needed to advance American Progress’ institutional giving portfolio.
Requirements and qualifications:
Four to seven years of foundation relations experience or comparable work with foundations is required, preferably at a nonprofit advocacy or policy-oriented organization.
Demonstrated success managing a seven-figure portfolio of foundation donors and managing relationships with both program officers and internal colleagues to create the conditions for success.
Demonstrated success in soliciting and renewing contributions from institutional funders by articulating a compelling case for support through multiple communication tools, such as grant proposals, reports, budget documents, and verbal and visual presentations, among others.

In partnership with the Chief Program Officer, set and implement the strategy for the organization’s federal policy and advocacy priorities;
Create and implement a strategy for partnership and coalition building to advance health care priorities that reflect people’s needs;
Drive progress towards our ambitious mission, balancing innovative, big picture thinking with day-to-day excellence in execution including measuring success and ensuring resources are used for maximum results;
Provide collaborative leadership for the Policy & External Affairs team members executing at the state level;

Partnership Building
Serve as the organization’s primary liaison with members of Congress, Congressional, and federal agency staff to build and maintain bipartisan and bicameral relationships;
With other organization leaders, proactively identify, pursue and maintain relationships and connections with federal policy and advocacy organizations and other stakeholders to advance USofCare’s work and mission;
Work in collaboration with the Development team to identify and cultivate philanthropic relationships;

Team Management
Directly manage a growing Policy & External Affairs team, including overseeing the Policy & External Affairs Team’s tracking and reporting against programmatic grants and compliance with relevant lobbying-related regulations as needed;
Lead through example to provide direct reports with collaborative support and strategic consult, demonstrating a commitment to their work priorities and professional growth; and
Prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion principles, including utilizing the organization’s equity lens to inform all work.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, including direct management experience;
Bachelor’s degree required;
A commitment to ensuring that everyone has access to affordable health care;
A deep knowledge of the health care landscape and a nuanced understanding of the health policy sector, including Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, and policy areas related to increasing access to care and controlling health care costs;
Sophisticated understanding of the federal landscape, including experience working with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. and/or the federal government and/or in a senior policy or advocacy role at an external organization ;
Experience operating at the state level to inform federal policy change or, at a minimum, exposure to state level policy change;
Proven ability to communicate policy priorities to diverse audiences, with a preference for candidates who have experience in in bipartisan environments;
Exceptional relationship building skills, with a preference for candidates who previously served in a partnership focused role;
