Job Description

JOB TITLE:  Heavy Equipment Operator (bilingual preferred)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Operates and maintains various types of earth moving, paving and general construction equipment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports directly to supervisor and/or project superintendent and/or Vice President of Operations.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:  None.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Requires full range of body motion including and operating levers or controls, manual dexterity and eye hand coordination. Requires use of foot-controlled pedals and sitting for extensive periods of time.  Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling items weighing up to 100 pounds. Sometimes requires working at heights. Requires correct vision and hearing within normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions.  This is a safety sensitive position.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:  Frequent exposure to rain, sleet, snow, dust, mud, heat, cold, noise and other conditions common to a construction site. Contractual obligations may require irregular hours, out-of-town work, overnight stays, nights, weekends, and holidays.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:  (This may not include all of the duties assigned)

  1. Reads and sets elevations and grades.
  2. Distinguishes between properties, types and moisture content of soils.
  3. Performs preventative maintenance and inspections.
  4. Operates various types of ditching, trenching, hoisting, earth-moving, and miscellaneous construction equipment (or asphalt and concrete paving machines and equipment).
  5. Starts, warms up, checks controls and shuts down machines.
  6. Performs pre-and post-operational inspections.
  7. Knows, understands, and follows the rules and regulations of the Company “Employee Safety Policy and Handbook.”
  8. Performs related work as required.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

              Knowledge of the safe and efficient use of hand and power tools. Knowledge of the working mechanics of diesel and gas engines, hydraulics and electrical functions of construction equipment. Knowledge of welding processes. Understanding of the hazards of chemicals including materials such as oils, antifreeze, asphalt, cement, solvents, and battery acids. Basic reading, writing and simple math skills. Bilingual in Spanish preferred.

 EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent may be required.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum 1 year heavy equipment experience, asphalt paving experience a plus.

CERTIFICATE/LICENSE: Valid and active driver license may be required. CDL License with hazardous materials is preferred, but may not be required.

ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Construction experience within this job description and a commercial, active and valid driver license (CDL) with endorsement is preferred.
