PAY SCALE:  Temporary pay differential of $19.00-$20.00 per hour DOE, non-exempt.
DURATION: Temporary position duration is from November 1st to December 31st 2020.
FTE:  1.0 FTE (40 hours per week).
BENEFITS: Because this position is temporary it is non-benefited, however, does accrue sick time and vacation time in accordance with MHAAO’s Employee Handbook and Oregon Sick Leave requirements.

JOB SUMMARY:

The Hispanic/Latinx culturally-specific Peer Support Specialist (PSS)/Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) offers culturally-specific addiction and/or mental health recovery peer support to individuals residing in Washington County as a peer who has similar life experiences and acts as a positive role model of living in recovery. The PSS will work exclusively with the Hispanic/Latinx community and speak both English and Spanish.

The PSS/CRM provides community-based, holistic, person-centered, trauma-informed and strength-based support to individuals with addiction and/or co-occurring mental health challenges. Support may be provided to individuals utilizing virtual platforms and in a wide variety of locations in the community with an additional focus on Latinx community members who are staying at one of the 3 shelter locations in Hillsboro, Oregon: Safe Sleep Village, Safe Sleep RV and the Respite Shelter at the Comfort Inn & Suites locations.

Because peer support or recovery mentorship is still relatively new concept to the Hispanic/Latinx community part of this temporary position will include outreach. Under outreach, the PSS will conduct presentations on the concept of peer support to Hispanic/Latinx culturally specific programs and organizations. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Background Check:  Criminal Background Check as performed by Oregon Health Authority (OHA) or MHACBO for the PSS/CRM certification process by the Background Check Unit (BCU) accepted. A criminal record does not necessarily exclude an individual from certification.

Experience:  It is an essential function of the position to identify as having lived experience of addiction and/or co-occurring mental health challenges and navigating a life of recovery. The candidate should speak and ideally read and write in English and Spanish, as well as culturally knowledgeable of Hispanic/Latinx culture. It is also vital to understand the effect of trauma on health, coping, and other aspects of individual needs as well as the principles of recovery, self-direction, and trauma-informed care.

Qualities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of resources in the Hispanic/Latinx community.
  • Ability to speak in front of small gatherings.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and specifically within

Hispanic/Latinx culture.

  • Keyboard skills and ability to navigate electronic systems applicable to job functions.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and necessary paperwork.

Licensure/Certification:  Oregon Health Authority (OHA) Peer Support Specialist (PSS) certification and MHACBO Certified Recovery Mentor (CRM) certification is required but may be applied for within 1 month of hire. This position requires at least 2 years of addiction recovery.

Valid Oregon Driver’s License and proof of automobile insurance required. Have reliable transportation preferred.

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Speak English and Spanish.
  • Familiar with Hispanic/Latinx community and culture.
  • Familiar with Hispanic/Latinx specific resources.
  • Comfortable with giving presentations and answering questions in front of small groups.
  • Provide one on one peer support or facilitate peer support group meetings
  • Collaborates with individuals to create Person Directed (centered) Plans.
  • Participates in regular peer support supervision sessions.
  • Attend staff meetings as applicable to gain knowledge and communicate program goals and the needs of the individuals being served.
  • Implements the regulations, policies, and procedures which pertain to peer-delivered service.
  • Meets with people in the community and/or their homes to establish and maintain a positive and trusting relationship.
  • Following the direction of the individuals served, assist peers in exploring strategies that increase satisfaction with the eight dimensions of wellness.
  • Assists people being served with identifying and engaging various community resources and supports.
  • Offers people being served educational opportunities to explore new resources, information and alternatives to utilizing the emergency department for non-emergent needs.
  • Administers outcome measurement tools with individuals being served and participates in data collection.
  • Reflects and practices the core values and principles of peer support.
  • Documents supports services in a program database in a manner that assures compliance with policies, program procedures and local, state, and federal regulations. Maintains accurate and up-to-date documentation as required by program deliverables.
  • As appropriate, openly identifies as a person who has lived the experience of addiction and/or co-occurring mental health challenges and is able to appropriately share own recovery story with individuals being served.
  • Acts as a positive role model for individuals being served and exploring their own path to wellness and recovery.
  • Acts as an advocate for individuals being served when appropriate, both within the organization and also with other entities.
  • Respects and honors a person’s rights and responsibilities and demonstrates professional boundaries and ethics. Adheres to mandatory abuse reporting laws and HIPAA requirements.
