What you will do:

As a Seasonal Park Ranger 1 you will be responsible for enforcement duties including but not limited to: enforcing park area rules through the use of education and advisement, and possibly being commissioned to issue written warnings and citations; patrolling park areas and facilities, checking for misuse, undesirable activities, and hazardous situations; providing information and resource interpretation to park visitors and others; collecting and processing fees and charges with computerized registration equipment; and using best practices to protect cultural, historic and natural resources if tasked with specific resource duties.

 

In this role, you will clean park facilities including restrooms, showers, maintenance shops, and interpretive centers; ensure supplies are stocked in restrooms; collect garbage and recycling; and clean fireplaces. You will also be responsible for building and facility maintenance, construction maintenance, and repairing plumbing systems (unclogging toilets, repairing sinks, toilets, pipes).

 

Additionally, you will maintain, repair and construct buildings or structures requiring basic carpentry skills, painting, and the use of hand and power tools. You may give direction concerning work procedures to individuals or teams composed of volunteers, seasonal, permanent or temporary state park employees or correctional facility inmates on a task specific basis. Your work will be done primarily in the outdoors, at various times of the day, in all weather conditions and possible at night, on weekends and on holidays.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

(a) Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

OR
(b) An Associate's degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies; AND Six (6) months of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

  • Ability to evaluate situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Experience giving direction concerning work procedures to individuals or teams composed of volunteers and correctional facility inmates in accomplishing different and varied tasks to achieve goals.
  • Leadership experience with diverse work teams including seasonal staff, other permanent staff, volunteers, corrections crews, or the general public.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with frequent changing priorities and disruptions.
  • Experience providing inclusive customer service while working with the public or in a public setting.
  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
