Job Description

Founded in 1936, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF or Federation) is America's largest and most trusted grassroots conservation organization with 53 state and territorial affiliates and more than six million members and supporters, including hunters, anglers, gardeners, birders, hikers, campers, paddlers, and outdoor enthusiasts of all stripes. The National Wildlife Federation's mission is to unite all Americans to ensure wildlife thrive in a rapidly changing world. The organization accomplishes this through programming focused on conserving wildlife, restoring habitats and waterways, expanding outdoor opportunities, connecting children with nature, and addressing the causes and consequences of climate change.

To support our mission, we are seeking an Internal Communications Director, based in the National Advocacy Center in Washington, D.C., to join the National Wildlife Federation’s communications team.

In this role you will help lead internal communications for the National Wildlife Federation. Working in partnership with the national communications team, regional and program leads, and senior leadership, you will design and implement an internal communications strategy that enhances collaboration, streamlines and improves staff-to-staff communications, and builds internal familiarity with important information about the mission, work, and goals of the organization.

Important elements will include:

  • Plan, design and implement an internal communications strategy that builds awareness across the National Wildlife Federation about its ongoing work in support of people and wildlife alike
  • Write, edit and develop compelling content, including internal newsletters, all-staff emails, and internal announcements, with vivid storytelling and thoughtful framing that educates, informs, connects with, and inspires team members
  • Elevate the work and stories of BIPOC-led programs and staff
  • Work in partnership with the Vice President of Communications to advise the CEO and senior leadership on internal communications
  • Handle the internal communication response to crisis communications situations
  • Partner with the Strategic Business Operations team to curate the organization’s intranet site
  • Support the sharing of information with members of the National Wildlife Federation’s Board of Directors and state and territorial affiliates
  • Develop, socialize, and implement policies and procedures for communicating with staff on behalf of the organization as well as to the organization’s leadership on behalf of staff
  • Ensure internal communications are in-line with the organization’s brand and consistent in style, quality and tone
  • Support the planning and execution of all-staff convenings to ensure they are conducted in a way that is consistent with the National Wildlife Federation’s mission, values, and strategic plan

During normal business operations, there will be local travel/meetings outside the office 2-4 times/month, including travel to the National Wildlife Federation's headquarters in Reston, Virginia, and regional offices, and occasional overnight travel.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in an appropriate discipline (English, journalism, public relations, environmental communications or public policy).
  • At least six years of dynamically responsible experience in internal communications, public relations, marketing, or journalism, with a minimum of two years of experience leading projects in an operation that delivered quantifiable results.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • General knowledge of wildlife, water, environmental education, outdoor recreation/hunting/fishing issues, and climate change.
  • Superior analytical, writing, verbal and management skills.

Your actions are expected to reflect the staff values of the National Wildlife Federation: collaboration, mindfulness, empowerment, inclusivity, and mission focus.
