The work location for this exciting opportunity is virtual. The selected candidate will work 100% remotely from home and can be located anywhere in the United States. Will work an East Coast schedule/ times.
Reporting directly to the Vice President, Communications, the Senior Director, Social & Public Engagement oversees the enterprise-wide social media strategy and day-to-day social media and public inquiry efforts of the American Red Cross.
The Sr. Director, Social & Public Engagement works to promote the full mission of the Red Cross and raise the profile of the organization across the social media and public inquiry space. This position engages with the public through social platforms and through the general inquiry form on RedCross.org to grow the online community of Red Cross supporters. This position will be responsible for advancing the social media strategy of the Red Cross to support the mission of the organization: public information before, during and after a disaster, blood collection, training in life-saving skills, fundraising, services to the military, and other activities and visibility goals of Red Cross business units.
The successful candidate for this position will be a visionary in social engagement and community collaboration, a proven innovator in use of social media to drive business goals and possess the ability to collaborate across a highly complex organization. The successful candidate also will be an established leader in the field of data usage, audience engagement and/or technology innovation.
Build on the Red Cross social media engagement and public inquiry presence and further apply that expertise to support the business goals of American Red Cross Training Services, Biomedical Services, Fundraising and Marketing units.
Lead and manage a team of talented social media and public inquiry professionals.
Work with Disaster Cycle Services to ensure they have the appropriate data to inform situational awareness and operational decision-making during a disaster. Ensure that social media monitoring reports are provided to internal and external stakeholders in a timely basis during emergencies.
Maintain a forward-thinking approach to ensure that the Red Cross is using the most cutting-edge technologies and tactics to communicate through social channels.
Ensure that Red Cross regions have the tools, resources, capacity and guidelines to understand and execute enterprise social media strategies in alignment with the national level.
Work with Marketing, Fundraising and other departments to track metrics that measure the support of business goals. Ensure regular reporting of social media and public inquiry metrics to Communication Department and Red Cross leadership.
Maintain and oversee Standard Operating Procedures for social media during emergencies, as well as Social Media Guidelines for Red Cross staff and volunteers.
Ensure that social media is fully and appropriately incorporated into campaigns, product launches and other programs.
Represent social engagement priorities in projects and initiatives involving other digital properties, such as app development, the corporate web site and others.
Oversee the day-to-day management of the Red Cross social communities, including the original content developed for those platforms.
Work with Communications Department leadership to offer advice and counsel to help mitigate issues in the social and public inquiry space.
Engage with thought leaders in the social space and represent the organization in the technology and social media industries.
Participate in the training of Red Cross Advanced Public Affairs Team members, regional communicators, digital volunteers and other parties.
Serve as a spokesperson for media inquiries involving technology or social media issues.
Qualified candidates must be authorized to work in the United States. The American Red Cross does not sponsor employment visas.
The Red Cross is searching for a dynamic, creative and polished individual to fill this role. The ideal candidate for this position will have 10 or more years of experience in social engagement, media relations, public relations and/or marketing, specifically including 3-5 years of experience managing an enterprise-wide social media program for a large organization. Brand &/or experience working at a social media platform is preferred.
Proficiency and proven success using social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and others to achieve business goals is essential. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to relate to the public in an engaging, compelling and compassionate way through social platforms and social content. Must also have experience managing reputational and crisis communications.
Candidates must have 5 years managerial experience and the ability to collaborate with people at all levels of a large, complex organization. The ability to thrive in and enjoy a fast paced, deadline-driven environment is essential. This position will require irregular or extended hours, especially during disasters or other emergencies.
Travel: 25% & can be on short notice
