Summary:

Provide clinical apheresis procedures in variable locations, including inpatient and outpatient areas. Perform clinical apheresis procedures as needed in emergencies to include after-hours weekends and holidays. These procedures include Leukopaks and Dendreon Collections.

 

Demonstrate excellence in customer service and public relations to promote a positive professional image of the American Red Cross Biomedical Services. Works independently with attention to detail and possesses the necessary knowledge of all aspects of daily operations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all phases of therapeutic apheresis procedures ensuring safe and appropriate care of the patient.

  • Report patient status relative to therapeutic apheresis, prior and during procedures, including blood test results and other clinically significant procedures.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with all ARC departmental and organizational standard operating procedures, policies, practices, and regulations.

  • Explain, as needed, clinical apheresis procedures to patients and their families and other attending healthcare professionals.

  • Coordinate closely with hospital staff at a variety of hospitals to arrange therapeutic apheresis treatments and coordinate apheresis with other procedures as necessary.

  • Evaluate patient medication for safety of apheresis procedure.

  • Represent the American Red Cross to the community and internal customers by establishing and promoting a positive organizational and professional image.

  • Complete necessary training and demonstrate competency to perform each job function.

  • Assemble, restock, perform quality control and maintain supplies and equipment in a state of readiness to maintain a clean, safe and efficient work environment.

  • If appropriate, operate American Red Cross vehicles in compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of one year of experience in medical/surgical or critical care nursing is required. 

  • Current CPR certification.

  • Good vein selection and venipuncture skills are essential.

  • Good verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss procedures and medical issues with patients, families, and physicians. 

  • Previous apheresis or dialysis experience is preferred.

  • Customer service experience, effective verbal communication, and public relations skills are preferred. 

  • Must be able to work independently, provide quality patient care, problem solve and take appropriate actions as necessary.

  • A current valid driver's license and good driving record are required.

  • Medical Technologist, or Licensed Practical Nurse depending on the requirements of state legislation, and with current state licensure as required.

This position is covered by the City of Philadelphia Emergency Regulation Governing the Control and Prevention of COIVD-19 Mandating Vaccines for Healthcare Workers and in Higher Education, Healthcare and Related Settings. This means that all individuals working in this position must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by no later than October 15, 2021. If you are unable to be vaccinated due to medical or religious reasons, you may qualify for an exemption. If seeking an exemption, you will be required to submit documentation to support your request prior to being hired.
