Job Summary

The English Learning Lead Instructor/Coordinator teaches non-credit Integrated English Language and Civics Education (IELCE) and English Language Learning (ELL) classes as part of the Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) program, which is funded by and operated in accordance with the federal and state Department of Education, at the Van G. Miller Adult Learning Center. IELCE uses the Integrated Education and Training model which combines workforce preparation activities and workforce training (e.g., Basic Construction Skills) with contextualized language and literacy activities to increase a participant’s educational and career advancement. Serves as lead instructor for ELL instructional staff and volunteers, providing leadership, professional development, and support. Assists Manager with ELL and Family Literacy with coordination tasks. Participates in strategic planning and program improvement initiatives.

 

Essential Job Functions

Important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Teaches morning and evening IELCE and/or ELL classes as assigned.
  • Assists Manager with day-to-day operations of the ELL and IELCE programs.
  • Develops IELCE and/or ELL classes as needed (g., vocational trades, basic construction, workplace technology, transition, summer, and online/remote/blended).
  • Integrates and contextualizes ELL instruction, EL civics and citizenship, workplace safety, employability skills, and workforce preparation activities with workforce training.
  • Works with a diverse population of non-native English-speaking adult students.
  • Leads and collaborates with other AEL staff for special events (g., hiring events, worksite visits, completion ceremonies).
  • Assists in curriculum development and improvement for new and existing IELCE and ELL classes and initiatives.
  • Serves as ELL instructional technology expert.
  • Provides professional development (g., best practices and current research related to second language acquisition, online instruction, technology integration, standards-based instruction, etc.) for ELL and other AEL staff as appropriate. Leads some ELL staff meetings.
  • Collaborates with college and community personnel to ensure increased student achievement and rates of transition to postsecondary education and training.
  • Assists with coordinating volunteers in the ELL program.
  • Assists Manager with implementation of Department of Education initiatives, including College and Career Readiness Standards, English Language Proficiency Standards, 21st Century Employability Skills, STAR Reading, and Program/Instructor Standards. Completes training as needed.
  • Stays current on research involving student recruitment, attendance, persistence, retention, and completion.
  • Ensures program compliance with federal, state, and college requirements.
  • Maintains program records and collaborates with college personnel on all necessary data tracking.
  • Makes recommendations for purchases of new teaching materials, digital tools, and equipment.
  • Serves as a positive voice to community groups about AEL/IELCE/ELL.
  • Seeks opportunities for students to gain employability skills as well as employment assistance.
  • Collaborates with Workforce Development, Business and Community Education, and Workforce Training and Community Development to integrate workforce training and services into programming.
  • Serves on the Integrated Education and Training (IET) planning team to identify and implement new programming and classes.
  • Attends meetings with college and community groups.
  • Serves on internal and external committees.
  • Provides substitute ELL teaching coverage on- and off-site as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, TESOL, English, instructional technology, or a related field.
  • One-year teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to complete additional trade training and certifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise professional judgement.
  • Demonstrated high proficiency using Google Suite and Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrated ability to work a flexible schedule which includes Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach year-round, including summers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations (faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and general public).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s in TESOL and/or Education and/or teaching certification.
  • Experience teaching Adult Education and Literacy (AEL), IELCE, IET, I-BEST, and/or adult ELL classes.
  • Experience in skilled trades and workforce training.
  • Experience with instructional/classroom technology.

 

Working Conditions 

Requires skills for succeeding in an office environment, using technology. Requires good hand-eye coordination including visual acuity to use a keyboard and read technical information; arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Work is performed in an office setting. Sit, stand, bend, lift and move intermittently during working hours. During course of day, interact with students, faculty and staff in person, by telephone and computer.
