American Red Cross Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a nutrition-assistance program dedicated to improving the health and development of families with little ones under the age of five. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

Provides direct nutrition services to individual clients and small groups enrolled in the WIC Program. Certifies WIC participants; interprets WIC services to the community; functions in various positions as needed; complies with ARC WIC policies and procedures; and performs related duties as may be assigned.

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD

  • Provide nutrition education to WIC participants to assure quality service          
  • Determine the medical/nutritional risk of applicants/participants by evaluating anthropometric, biochemical, dietary and other health-related data
  • Prescribe supplemental foods
  • Implement the Nutrition Education Plan and related curricula
  • Make decisions to disqualify participants
  • Coordinate and deliver individual and group nutrition education consistent with participant’s category, language, and nutrition intervention level in the program - both in-person and virtually
  • Communicate with participant's health care provider as needed for continuation of quality service
  • Provide counsel on nutritional and health-related problems in an empathetic manner, observing sound nutritional practices and participant confidentiality
  • Provide information about community resources to participants      
  • Work in various office positions to support co-workers and participants
  • Accurately interpret WIC policies and procedures both formally and informally
  • Contact participants to re-schedule missed appointments
  • Meet required WIC breastfeeding competencies

Promote and interpret WIC services to the Community       

  • Participate in outreach activities as needed

Carry out any additional assignments required to fulfill the mission of the American Red Cross and WIC            

  • Comply with all fiscal and operational requirements prescribed by the American Red Cross and the State WIC Branch, including those outlined in Red Cross employee handbook.
  • Contribute to agency’s caseload, breastfeeding promotion and support, and other department goals.
  • Implement changes as determined by audits in a positive and professional manner
  • Trained in Disaster Response in accordance with skill set

Pay Information: 

The hourly pay range for this position is (CA): $18.78/hr. - $21.17/hr.

Note that American Red Cross salaries are aligned to the specific geographic location in which the work is primarily performed. Other factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, how many years of experience you have and comparison to other employees already in this role. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED

Education:  Graduation from a four year college or university with a degree in Nutrition, Dietetics or other Nutrition related field.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of the WIC program and maternal child health preferred.
  • Must have experience working with the public.
  • Must have the ability to work well in a fast paced environment and to work with a multi-cultural staff and participant population. 

Skills and Abilities:   

  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills required. 
  • Confident using Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Teams, Excel and Word.
  • Able to create a professional videoconferencing presence and to communicate clearly in-person and by phone.
  • Able to teach groups of people about various topics.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Travel:  May require some travel.

A current, valid driver's license with good driving record is required.
