Chispa, a program of LCV, works to ensure that Latinx communities and leaders have a strong voice in the movement for climate justice and to influence the environmental policies and decisions that impact our health, environment and democracy. Currently, Chispa has programs in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, and Texas.

 

LCV is seeking a Chispa National State Communications Manager to provide communications support and coordinate with Chispa’s network of six state programs in AZ, CO, NV, FL, MD, and TX. The Chispa State National Communications Manager as a part of the Chispa national team, will be within the Communications Department and work in coordination with the Community and Civic Engagement Department. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to work with a creative communications team and be a part of an innovative team that centers on racial justice and equity and is grounded in equitable climate solutions and building long-term power for communities of color.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Represents Chispa’s national communications team in cross-departmental planning, and implementation as well as in Chispa network spaces.
  • Work with the Communications team to build the Chispa state communications and creative strategy and support states to brainstorm and build out communications plans.
  • Support the creation of state-level content and materials with Chispa states. Collaborate with Chispa National Digital Campaigns Manager to develop digital resources for states.
  • Support states with local press engagement, and track local and state press lists. Oversee media relations efforts at the local and state level to drive narratives that will reach new and diverse audiences, including high-profile and local media opportunities.
  • Manage the drafting of statements, op-eds, press releases, quotes, blogs, and other materials related to Chispa states.
  • Pitch op-eds and exclusives at the local and state level in support of state programs, in coordination with the Chispa National Communications and Creative Strategies Director.
  • Manage the training of state affiliates on various communications skills and tactics such as storytelling, pitching reporters, speaking on the record, executing media events, managing crisis communications, writing communications products, and embedding racial justice and equity throughout communications.
  • Own the creation of overarching communication strategies that build connective tissue amongst states, drive Chispa’s collective narrative and build Chispa’s organizing, and advocacy focused on climate and democracy while reaching racially diverse audiences.
  • Manage coordination between states and national on federal issues or vice versa that affect state communications strategies.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time for staff retreats, trainings and conferences, as needed.

 

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience: Required - Minimum of 4 years experience in communications, digital, and/or advocacy. Experience writing, creating, and/or curating compelling content. Experience in communications targeting Latinx or communities of color.
    • Preferred - Experience in movement-building work, storytelling, and creative strategies; experience in press engagement; English and Spanish-language communications.
  • Skills: Required - Excellent writing skills; commitment to measuring and tracking progress and outcomes; reliable, consistent, detail-oriented, and self-motivated; works well in a fast-paced environment and is able to multitask without sacrificing the quality of work.
    • Preferred - Bilingual (English-Spanish) verbal, writing, and/or editing skills; understanding of environmental and democracy issues and their potential to engage Latinx communities and communities of color.
  • Cultural Competence: Passionate about protecting our democracy, the environment, and communities impacted by climate change and environmental injustice. Committed to confronting institutional racism and inequity within our political system. An ability to apply a racial justice lens, and a variety of communities’ distinct perspectives to communications strategies. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. Understanding the ways in which principles of racial justice and equity are vital to improving our democratic systems and environmental challenges effectively.
  • Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment, and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and audiovisual systems. This position is largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. Ability to occasionally work evening and weekend hours as needed. Applicants need to be located in and legally authorized to work in the United States.
