Job Description

This is a full-time, permanent Chemist 1 position located with the Division of Disease Control & Health Statistics, in the Office of Newborn Screening.

 

This position in the Newborn Screening lab directly supports the Department of Health (DOH) mission of improving the health of infants born in Washington State by performing a wide variety of laboratory tests to detect treatable heritable disorders in newborns which cause permanent disability or death if not detected and treated shortly after birth.

 

As a Chemist 1, you will be responsible for:

  • Processing and testing a high volume of newborn dried blood specimens. 
  • Operating both complex and routine automatic and manual equipment including the use of a computer software system to perform preliminary readings, interpretations, and analysis of the test results. 
  • Setting up stat tests, maintaining quality control records, performing equipment maintenance, maintaining records of test results, monitoring supplies, preparing reagents & quality control materials.
  • Assisting the lead worker or supervisor in writing reports, procedures, and helping with evaluation and validation studies.

This position is required to have an on-site presence at the Shoreline duty station in order to perform the main scope of duties, functions and responsibilities of the position listed under the duties section.

 

The duty station for this position is in Shoreline, WA. The incumbent is expected to report to the duty station for work activities. The laboratory operates Monday-Saturday and on Holidays; the individual in this position must participate in rotations on Saturdays and Holidays. The incumbent will be assigned a regular Monday through Friday, or Tuesday through Saturday schedule.
