Job Description

This announcement will be used to fill two (2) full-time, permanent and one (1) full-time project Microbiologist 1 positions located within the Office of the Public Health Microbiology in Shoreline, WA.   The project position is currently funded through June 30, 2023.

 

These Microbiologist 1 positions are required to have an on-site presence in order to perform the main scope of duties, functions, and responsibilities of the positions.

 

The ARLN Microbiologist 1 positions are responsible for:

  • Perform laboratory testing in support of State and CDC sponsored Antimicrobial Resistance Lab Network goals. 
  • Accurate and timely performance of assigned laboratory work including but not limited to:
    1. Culture based identification methods
    2. Molecular diagnostic testing
    3. Conventional and molecular based AST methods
    4. Whole Genome Sequencing
  • Cross-training and supporting staff in bacterial/fungal antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) testing.  
  • Participating in laboratory maintenance activities such as ordering/stocking, quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), equipment calibration, verifications, proficiency testing, data entry, and specimen processing will be required.  
  • It is an expectation that all staff may be called upon to respond during public health emergencies. Supporting other areas in the Washington State Public Health Laboratories (PHL) may be required under certain circumstances such as when disease outbreaks occur.  
  • Working in compliance with College of American Pathology (CAP) guidelines under the guidance of the section Leads and Supervisor.

The project Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS) Microbiologist 1 position will participate in the daily operations of the Public Health Laboratories (PHL), Office of Public Health Microbiology, supporting testing for communicable disease surveillance and diagnosis. 

 

Position responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring that the laboratory is stocked and in working order for testing.
  • Culture of disease-causing bacteria including antibiotic susceptibility testing.
  • Performing serology (antigen and antibody detection methods).
  • Performing molecular based assays for diagnostics and surveillance. 
  • Providing support to other areas in the PHL laboratories as needed. 
  • Supporting lab activities by providing the testing skill to troubleshoot and develop new testing protocols. 
  • Supporting daily lab functions so that Lead and supervisory staff may focus on LIMS module replacement.

The Public Health Laboratory (PHL) provides diagnostic and analytical services for the assessment and surveillance of infectious, communicable, genetic, and chronic diseases and environmental health concerns. Briefly, primary users (clients) of PHL services include preventive medicine programs at the state, county, and federal level; hospitals; public health and medical laboratories seeking reference or consultation services; and physicians seeking assistance in diagnosing rare or unusual diseases (botulism, rabies, diphtheria, etc.)
