Drake University’s Department of Art and Design seeks a tenure track assistant professor in studio art beginning fall 2023. We are excited by the opportunity for an intermedia visual artist with the ability to teach all levels of painting and visual foundation studies to join our department. A successful candidate should provide evidence of effective and engaging teaching across a range of skill sets. Interdisciplinary approaches to artmaking and the use of digital processes in either personal artwork or teaching are encouraged. Teaching responsibilities include the possibility to develop courses related to the candidate’s areas of inquiry and collaborating with other departments.

The Department of Art and Design at Drake University is seeking candidates for a full-time, 9-month, Visiting Assistant Professor of Graphic Design position to begin in the fall of 2022. Art & Design is a nimble department within the liberal arts curriculum of the College of Art and Sciences at Drake University. We maintain a size that allows us to provide students with personalized experiences. From classwork to mentoring to internships, we guide students to incorporate their interests and values into their education and career goals.
As students move through our program they build on their liberal arts education, gaining skills in critical thinking and analysis, and in problem-based learning, through discussions, seminars, and hands-on experiences in art and design studios. Our courses are designed to encourage curiosity and enhance responsible artistic engagement, involving students in collaborative projects with campus and community organizations and with Drake University’s Anderson Gallery.
Position: Our search committee seeks a designer/design educator with a broad knowledge of social and cultural awareness that drives or is incorporated into their practice and process of design with an innovative approach to visual communication. A designer/design educator with a passion for student success and a strong understanding of design's role in society.
Salary is competitive with peer schools and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities: Candidate will teach 3 undergraduate classes per semester including but not limited to typography, design fundamentals, and interactive courses.
Required Qualifications:
- M.F.A. in Graphic Design or other relevant terminal degree (MDes, MAxGD, etc.)in a design discipline
- Proficiency in Adobe CC with expertise in Ps, Ai, Id, Xd, and Dw
- Strong understanding of typography, design fundamentals, and design processes
- Demonstrated ability in UX/UI and or coding (html, css, javascript, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching experience or evidence of teaching potential
- 1-5 years of professional graphic design experience
