There is a shift differential from 3pm-11pm of $1.75 per hour and 11pm-2am of $2.25 per hour. An additional $1.00 per hour for weekend hours. What is Leukopaks : L eukapheresis is the collection of leukocytes — also known as white blood cells or immune cells. A donor reclines in a chair and blood is drawn through a vein in one arm. An apheresis machine removes white blood cells from the superfluous biofluids, separates them based on density and collects them in a collection bag known as a leukopak. The remaining red blood cells and platelets are then returned to the same donor through a vein in their other arm. (The white blood cells that have been removed will be replaced quickly.) The white blood cells collected are frequently referred to as peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and contain B cells, T cells, stem/progenitor cells and dendritic cells. Leukapheresis allows for a concentrated, pure method to obtain PBMCs from a single individual donor. Leukopaks are used when a large number of PBMCs are needed from an individual donor, such as drug screening (immuno-oncology and non-oncology), cell therapy (research and development) and gene therapy. Sourcing healthy donor PBMCs allows for the use of single donor cell populations with greater viability and less inter- and intra-assay variability, as well as to develop well-characterized methods of production for autologous therapies (cell therapies where a patient’s own cells are modified for treatment). For these cell therapy developments, large numbers of PBMCs sourced from a single donor are important for creating relevant biological assays, as well as for quality control testing. In these cases, healthy donors are matched to patients in terms of demographic criteria, such as age and gender, and physiological criteria like HLA type, which can provide valuable insights in the progress of the patients’ own autologous cell therapy. At the American Red Cross, your uniqueness can shine!  WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):  As Lead Technologist in IRL, you will provide daily lead functions, perform basic and advanced donor and patient tests, and interpret results to determine donor-recipient compatibility. Resolve compatibility problems; provide complex reference and consultation services to hospitals and transfusion services. Perform automated and manual test procedures on blood samples. Adhere to explicit standard operating procedures and interpret test results in accordance with the applicable regulatory requirements. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers. WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE FOR GOOD (Key Responsibilities): Consult and communicate with staff at other medical facilities, to resolve complex serologic problems and provide special units to transfusion recipients. Manage daily workflow including patient and donor work, including ordering, receiving, inspecting, and preparing reagents. Perform and interpret basic and complex donor and/or patient testing procedures and complete required quality control, as appropriate to state and federal regulations. Recognize testing irregularities, identify the cause, determine the solution, and resolve the problem. Assist lab assistants, technicians, and technologists in problem resolution. Perform labeling and verification of blood products. Maintain, edit, and review computer and manual records to assure accurate record keeping.  Also perform maintenance, repair and validation of laboratory equipment and software maintenance. Perform record review, training, competency assessments, and general oversight of daily activities. Perform internal and external customer education. Assist in concern and problem management and quality improvement activities.  •             Standard Schedule: M- F First Shift  WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications): Education: bachelor’s degree in Biological Science or Chemistry with MT(ASCP) or BB(ASCP)/ equivalent certification. SBB (ASCP) preferred. Licensure, if required by the state. Experience: Minimum 7 years of blood banking experience including high complexity testing required. Skills and Abilities: Effective communication/interpersonal skills and excellent technical skills required, ability to work on a team.  Travel: N/A.
