YOUR OPPORTUNITY
As the Interim General Counsel (Maternity Coverage), you play an integral role in furthering The Humane League’s mission to end the abuse of animals raised for food. You will serve as part of the organization’s Senior Leadership Team, ensure that the organization operates within the law, offer counsel on legal issues, be an effective guardian of the organization, and facilitate programmatic and operational strategies ensuring legal compliance and limiting risk exposure.

This is a temporary full-time, remote position, reporting to the President. The temporary hire will provide coverage while a permanent staff member is on maternity leave, and overlap will be provided for training and onboarding. Employment is expected to be five and a half months in duration, beginning on approximately November 4, 2024. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, providing visionary thought leadership and strategic guidance organization wide
Set long-term strategic vision and priorities for the Legal team
Nonprofit compliance, including corporate governance, finance and tax, charitable solicitation, commercial co-ventures, international grantmaking, and lobbying
Direct THL’s international legal portfolio, including international liability and international labor and employment
Manage, develop, and mentor a small legal team. Provide vision and role clarity, guidance, coaching, training, and accountability. Manage the department’s budget and spending.
Support and advise the Board of Directors, including drafting and revising corporate policies, bylaws, minutes, agendas, and resolutions
Advise the People team on federal, multistate, and international employment law, including employee handbook and policies, contingent workforce compliance, employee training, and investigations
Advise management and staff on legal issues related to programmatic initiatives
Draft, review, and negotiate a wide variety of contracts for all aspects of the organization
Data privacy and security issues, training, and compliance. Will be exposed to concepts of US data privacy and GDPR.
Support the development of training materials, guidance documents, and relevant staff and volunteer training
Manage the organization’s insurance portfolio and intellectual property portfolio
Establish and manage relationships with pro bono attorneys and outside counsel.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Extensive generalist legal experience, including 10 years of prior experience in a nonprofit, government agency, or private sector. In-house counsel experience would be helpful. JD degree and status as a member of good standing of the bar in any state or the District of Columbia.
Experience working with a global organization and familiarity with working cross-culturally and with those of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
A desire to advise and support The Humane League’s contentious and relentless corporate campaign work. Willingness to assess and recommend an appropriate amount of risk in programmatic work in accordance with our goals and the urgency of our mission.
Interest in leading both litigation and administrative aspects of the legal function.
Able to critically evaluate a wide range of issues and provide sound legal advice. Able to develop familiarity with legal systems in and outside of the U.S. and to adapt policies and procedures in compliance with local law. Compensation and Benefits
The annual compensation range for this role is $142,499 - $174,165 USD . At The Humane League, we believe in maintaining a fair and equitable work environment for all employees. The Mission Coach and New Beginnings programs attempt to address the fragmented structure of the social services industry by taking a holistic, whole-family approach, with additional supports for those who have had involvement with the criminal justice system. This approach is foundational to Goodwill’s existing wraparound services provided to employees and their families. The Mission Coaching Manager manages, mentors, and facilitates activities for program participants in order to provide stabilization tools and motivates long-term goal realization methods and motivational techniques to ensure program retention. The Manager provides strategies to prepare for success through training and supportive dialogue to coaches assisting our operations facilities. Reports to and works closely with the Senior Director, Coaching and Reentry Services to provide quality assistance to program participants. Additional duties include: networking with outside resources to establish partnerships, promoting Goodwill’s programs and services, and building and maintaining relationships with all stakeholders. The Mission Coaching Manager works with minimal supervision and relies on self-direction to complete goals as established by the organization and its funding partners.
Example Duties and Activities
Builds, implements, adheres to, and enforces the main components of the coaching model: stabilization, educational attainment, employment achievement, and health access and participation
Develops, implements, and maintains systems and processes for gathering business partner feedback. Tracks, evaluates, and reports all pertinent data (outputs and outcomes) to appropriate stakeholders. Utilizes data to identify gaps, trends, and opportunities for program improvement.
Partners with participants in developing individual development plans (IDPs) that will fit their specific needs and skills in relation to education and employment. Modifies plans as needed. Constructs and maintains initial documentation progress files.
Secures supplementary information such as employment, criminal history, medical records, psychological, agency referrals, eligibility documentation, or school reports.
Assists participants in accessing community resources, wrap-around services, and making appropriate referrals.
Provides direct counseling, intervention, advocacy, and referrals; provides transportation services when needed. Provides assistance and direction, encouraging participants toward self-dependence in daily decision-making and problem-solving activities.
Conducts regular employment progress reports. Performs worksite evaluations to determine potential accommodations. Performs liaison functions with referral sources and other community agencies.
Confirms all team members, including the manager, have all tools and professional development opportunities necessary to learn, grow, and reach program goals. This includes updated training manuals, reference guides, and best practices procedures.
Oversees the intake, job search, job development, job placement, and job retention services for AbilityOne sites.
Trains and develops coaching skills to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the Goodwill coaching model including how to motivate and guide participants to act on and achieve their long-term educational, employment, and health goals in life.
Initiates and maintains communication with key community partners, including Goodwill staff and external community agencies to enhance the menu of services provided to clients. Ensures that all appropriate agreements are in place. Acts as primary contact for outside agencies, including through the development of referral partners.
Conducts and maintains all reporting required for compliance with grant-specific guidelines, governing agencies, and accreditation standards, including the fidelity of a database and participant files.
Monitors services and training payments made by Goodwill on behalf of participants. Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and referral source specifications are met. Ensures billing is submitted timely and accurately. Maintains good stewardship of internal supportive service funding.
Stays abreast of current labor market data to provide clients information on employment opportunities.

Trains and develops coaching skills to gain a comprehensive knowledge of the Goodwill coaching model including how to motivate and guide participants to act on and achieve their long-term educational, employment, and health goals in life.
Initiates and maintains communication with key community partners, including Goodwill staff and external community agencies to enhance the menu of services provided to clients. Ensures that all appropriate agreements are in place. Acts as primary contact for outside agencies, including through the development of referral partners.
Conducts and maintains all reporting required for compliance with grant-specific guidelines, governing agencies, and accreditation standards, including the fidelity of a database and participant files.
Monitors services and training payments made by Goodwill on behalf of participants. Ensures compliance with company policies and procedures and referral source specifications are met. Ensures billing is submitted timely and accurately. Maintains good stewardship of internal supportive service funding.
Stays abreast of current labor market data to provide clients information on employment opportunities.

Making Waves Foundation is an education nonprofit that supports historically underserved and underrepresented students to pursue college and career pathways that set them up for a thriving career, financial independence, and a choice-filled life.
We support Making Waves Academy (MWA), a 5-12 grade public charter school in Richmond, CA. After high school graduation, each of our students (we call them “Wave-Makers”) are invited to join our college success and early career program, where they can receive a need-based scholarship, one-to-one college coaching, and financial literacy training. Each year, we support over 1,200 students grades 5-12 and over 500 college students on their journeys to and through college. Making Waves Foundation is an education nonprofit that supports historically underserved and underrepresented students to pursue college and career pathways that set them up for a thriving career, financial independence, and a choice-filled life.
We support Making Waves Academy (MWA), a 5-12 grade public charter school in Richmond, CA. After high school graduation, each of our students (we call them “Wave-Makers”) are invited to join our college success and early career program, where they can receive a need-based scholarship, one-to-one college coaching, and financial literacy training. Each year, we support over 1,200 students grades 5-12 and over 500 college students on their journeys to and through college. In 2020, Making Waves Foundation launched a new strategic plan to serve more students and families. THE ROLE
This is a senior executive position at Unite America. The role has high accountability, will report directly to the Executive Director, and will serve as an integral member of the executive team helping to drive the mission, values, and performance of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and the rest of the executive team to develop, communicate, and execute a holistic people strategy.
Support Unite America’s mission through talent acquisition, development, and management, including implementing long-range strategic talent management objectives.
