Breakthrough Greater Boston prepares low-income students for success in college and trains the next generation of urban teachers using a unique Students Teaching Students model. Through our six-year program, students gain a passion for learning and the perseverance and tools to succeed in college and beyond. Teaching Fellows gain intensive in-classroom experience, expert training and 1:1 coaching.
Through six years of intensive, tuition-free, out of school time programming, we change students’ academic trajectories and support them along the path to college. We are building the next generation of teachers through competitive recruitment, research-based training, and coaching from master teachers.
Founded by MacArthur Genius Award winner Angela Duckworth in 1992 in Cambridge, we expanded into Boston in 2013, followed by Somerville in 2018. With the 2024 completion of our growth plan, Breakthrough will serve 900 students and 200 teachers annually.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Breakthrough Greater Boston is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Director of Student Services (DSS) to oversee all aspects of student and family support services as well as program management for our 7 th - 8 th grade school-year and summer programs at Breakthrough’s Somerville Campus. The DSS will be responsible for student recruitment and admissions, student support services, management of the Advising Program, family engagement, social emotional learning and fostering strong school partnerships. The DSS also plans and co-leads a weekly after-school program and six-week academic summer program for middle school students. The SDSS works closely with other members of a dynamic Program Team and reports directly to the Managing Director of Student Services.
POSITION OUTCOMES
A successful Director of Student Services will in close alignment with the Managing Director of Student Services to:
Manage recruitment and admissions efforts across Breakthrough’s partner schools to enroll a cohort of 45-50 students annually
Oversee family engagement initiatives including maintaining frequent positive communication and facilitating fall and spring family check-ins for all 7 th and 8 th grade families
Maintain accurate, up-to-date student records to inform appropriate social emotional support services and/or academic interventions
Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to plan and implement high quality school year and summer programming
Work closely with the Director of Curriculum and Instruction to ensure all middle school students are well supported in their academic and social emotional learning

Develop and maintain student recruitment pipeline relationships with teachers, administrators and parent liaisons at partner schools as well as representatives from other youth-serving organizations
Plan and conduct a comprehensive student recruitment effort, including recruitment presentations and workshops in all sixth grade classrooms at partner schools
Oversee student admissions, selecting the most qualified students from a pool of applicants from 6 th grade classes across our partner schools
Student Support
Support students’ social emotional health and well-being, including supervising BTGB’s school-year and summer counselors
Manage Student Advising Program to ensure that all students are connected to a BTGB advisor and receiving consistent advocacy touchpoints
Oversee the creation and implementation of Tier I, Tier II and Tier III interventions to support students, including daily mindfulness practice (Tier I), restorative circles (Tier II) and SEL Skill Building groups (Tier III)
Provide students with connections to supplemental and enrichment opportunities and maintain important organizational partnerships
Collect relevant data (report cards and progress reports) to track student academic progress
Family Involvement
Maintain positive, frequent communication with students’ families, nurturing healthy, trusting relationships and collaboratively ensuring students’ success
Conduct family check-ins each semester with all families to assess academic progress, address areas of concern and discuss extra-curricular enrichment opportunities
Work with the Board of Directors family representative to support the Family Advisory Board and encourage broad family participation in student recruitment, family communications, special events, and more

The MCA will be responsible for ensuring that 11 th and 12 th grade students at their campus are fully supported as they apply and matriculate to college by offering intentional programming, individualized resources, and advocacy. The MCA works closely with other members of a dynamic Program Team and reports directly to the Managing Director of College Access and Success.

Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with 11 th -12 th grade students their campus, supporting their academic and social emotional growth while supporting their post-secondary planning

Oversee development of innovative, responsive college access programming for their campus

In this exciting role you will be responsible for a variety of responsibilities including:
Student and Family Support
Directly support students at your campus through existing 11 th and 12 th grade school year programming, including course counseling, test prep, college visits, and the College Access Coach program
Champion students by nurturing individual student strengths and providing holistic advocacy, interventions, and resources as needed
Provide students with connections to supplemental career and enrichment opportunities during the summer and school year
Maintain regular communication with students’ families, including annual family check-ins, relevant family workshops, and individualized support with college and financial aid processes as needed
Oversee students’ transition from 12 th grade to college success programming
Program Management
Supervise a team of dedicated volunteer College Access Coaches at your campus to work one-on-one with juniors and seniors on various components of the college application process
Develop and lead student and family workshops connected to the college and financial aid application processes
Plan and lead the summer College Prep Institute for rising 12 th grade students
Support students in our College Transition Program through summer workshops, panels, and other modes of outreach as appropriate
Create new programming as appropriate to further our vision of every Breakthrough student having the skills and knowledge needed to attend – and be successful in – college; collaborate with team members at other campuses to ensure thoughtful, site-specific implementation of this programming

In collaboration with other Directors, maintain positive, frequent communication with school staff members, representatives from local community-based organizations, and target colleges

Breakthrough Greater Boston is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Manager of College Access (MCA) to oversee all aspects of programming for 11 th and 12 th grade students at the Cambridge Campus. The MCA will be responsible for ensuring that 11 th and 12 th grade students at their campus are fully supported as they apply and matriculate to college by offering intentional programming, individualized resources, and advocacy. The MCA works closely with other members of a dynamic Program Team and reports directly to the Managing Director of College Access and Success.

A successful Manager of College Access will work in close alignment with the Managing Director of College Access and Success to:
Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with 11 th -12 th grade students their campus, supporting their academic and social emotional growth while supporting their post-secondary planning
Maintain positive, regular communication with students’ families and other important adults, nurturing trusting relationships and collaboratively ensuring students’ success
Oversee development of innovative, responsive college access programming for their campus
Collaborate with other Program Team members to create a seamless layer of support for students and families during Breakthrough’s six-year program

Student and Family Support
Directly support students at your campus through existing 11 th and 12 th grade school year programming, including course counseling, test prep, college visits, and the College Access Coach program
Champion students by nurturing individual student strengths and providing holistic advocacy, interventions, and resources as needed
Provide students with connections to supplemental career and enrichment opportunities during the summer and school year
Maintain regular communication with students’ families, including annual family check-ins, relevant family workshops, and individualized support with college and financial aid processes as needed
Oversee students’ transition from 12 th grade to college success programming
Program Management
Supervise a team of dedicated volunteer College Access Coaches at your campus to work one-on-one with juniors and seniors on various components of the college application process
Develop and lead student and family workshops connected to the college and financial aid application processes
Plan and lead the summer College Prep Institute for rising 12 th grade students
Support students in our College Transition Program through summer workshops, panels, and other modes of outreach as appropriate
Create new programming as appropriate to further our vision of every Breakthrough student having the skills and knowledge needed to attend – and be successful in – college; collaborate with team members at other campuses to ensure thoughtful, site-specific implementation of this programming
Ensure accurate and effective data collection to inform programmatic decision making and advance students’ eventual success
Partnership Management
In collaboration with other Directors, maintain positive, frequent communication with school staff members, representatives from local community-based organizations, and target colleges
Conduct semesterly guidance counselor check-ins to further inform individual supports for students and identify additional enrichment opportunities
Oversee collection and analysis of 11 th and 12 th grade student academic records including report cards, progress reports and Individualized Education Plans
YOUR BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

Student Services Team Supervision
Hire program staff on the Student Services team, including permanent full-time employees, as well as oversee the hiring of part-time and seasonal staff and regular programmatic volunteers

With expansion, aid in new staff identification, hiring and training; site start-up efforts; and building strategic partnerships
Ensure the consistent high quality of programming across campuses
Maintain Breakthrough’s culture of collaboration; create effective and efficient cross-site communication and collaboration processes
Develop a knowledge management system that supports information sharing and ensures Breakthrough remains a best-in-class learning organization

THE OPPORTUNITY
Breakthrough Greater Boston is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Managing Director of Student Services (MDSS) to oversee all aspects of Student Services programming at its three campuses in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. Ensure BTGB’s positive relationships with its students, families and teachers through direct relationship building and advisement to the program team at a site level.

Site Leadership
Build vision and collaboration among site-based team members

Plan and conduct a comprehensive student recruitment effort, including recruitment presentations and workshops in all sixth-grade classrooms at partner schools
Oversee student admissions, selecting the most qualified students from a pool of applicants from 6 th grade classes across our partner schools
Student Support
Support students’ social emotional health and well-being, including supervising BTGB’s school-year and summer counselors
Manage Student Advising Program to ensure that all students are connected to a BTGB advisor and receiving consistent advocacy touchpoints
Oversee the creation and implementation of Tier I, Tier II and Tier III interventions to support students, including daily mindfulness practice (Tier I), restorative circles (Tier II) and SEL Skill Building groups (Tier III)
Provide students with connections to supplemental and enrichment opportunities and maintain important organizational partnerships
Collect relevant data (report cards and progress reports) to track student academic progress
Family Involvement
Maintain positive, frequent communication with students’ families, nurturing healthy, trusting relationships and collaboratively ensuring students’ success
Conduct family check-ins each semester with all families to assess academic progress, address areas of concern and discuss extra-curricular enrichment opportunities
Work with the Board of Directors family representative to support the Family Advisory Board and encourage broad family participation in student recruitment, family communications, special events, and more
Partnership Management
Help to articulate goals and advance work for your department’s partnerships
In collaboration with program team members, maintain frequent, positive and productive communication with school staff members, representatives from local community-based organizations, and target colleges to collaboratively ensure our students’ success

YOUR CONTRIBUTION
In this role you will be responsible for a combination of direct service, program oversight, and critical leadership responsibilities including:
Departmental Leadership
Build vision and collaboration among department team members across campuses
Plan and lead regular department meetings
Foster and develop key external partnerships linked to departmental work
Create and share regular program reports, highlights and updates
Represent Breakthrough at key events connected to your department
Collaborate with other program department heads to ensure aligned and high-quality programming across sites
Collaborate with the Development team to support in data and story-telling connected to your department
Support in hiring program staff within department area, including permanent full-time employees, as well as part-time and seasonal staff and regular programmatic volunteers
Observe programming within functional area across sites on a consistent basis
Provide coaching, mentoring and onboarding support to staff members within the department
Create coverage plans and cover open areas of work during staff transitions within department
Program Management
Work in collaboration with the rest of BTGB’s full-time program team to: Plan and implement summer and school-year programs
Oversee the day-to-day operations of year-round academic programming at your campus
Train and provide ongoing support to teaching fellows
Ensure accurate and effective data collection to inform programmatic decision making and student success
Student Recruitment and Admissions
Develop and maintain student recruitment pipeline relationships with teachers, administrators and parent liaisons at partner schools as well as representatives from other youth-serving organizations
Plan and conduct a comprehensive student recruitment effort, including recruitment presentations and workshops in all sixth-grade classrooms at partner schools
Oversee student admissions, selecting the most qualified students from a pool of applicants from 6 th grade classes across our partner schools
Student Support
Support students’ social emotional health and well-being, including supervising BTGB’s school-year and summer counselors
Manage Student Advising Program to ensure that all students are connected to a BTGB advisor and receiving consistent advocacy touchpoints
Oversee the creation and implementation of Tier I, Tier II and Tier III interventions to support students, including daily mindfulness practice (Tier I), restorative circles (Tier II) and SEL Skill Building groups (Tier III)
Provide students with connections to supplemental and enrichment opportunities and maintain important organizational partnerships
Collect relevant data (report cards and progress reports) to track student academic progress
Family Involvement
Maintain positive, frequent communication with students’ families, nurturing healthy, trusting relationships and collaboratively ensuring students’ success
Conduct family check-ins each semester with all families to assess academic progress, address areas of concern and discuss extra-curricular enrichment opportunities
Work with the Board of Directors family representative to support the Family Advisory Board and encourage broad family participation in student recruitment, family communications, special events, and more
Partnership Management
Help to articulate goals and advance work for your department’s partnerships
In collaboration with program team members, maintain frequent, positive and productive communication with school staff members, representatives from local community-based organizations, and target colleges to collaboratively ensure our students’ success
Conduct teacher check-ins each semester with all BTGB students’ teachers to assess academic progress, address areas of concern and identify enrichment opportunities
Oversee collection of student academic records, including report cards, progress reports and Individualized Education Plans
YOUR BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS

BTGB offers six years of academic enrichment and college preparation to middle school and high school students with high potential but limited opportunities. THE OPPORTUNITY
Breakthrough Greater Boston is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Director of Operations (DO) to ensure effective operational strategy and smooth day-to-day management including the oversight of essential systems and functions including finance, human resources, technology, business planning, facilities, and program operations management. As the organization continues to grow, the DO is responsible for ensuring that our processes and systems adapt and improve as the organization continues to evolve. The DO will have a primary area of focus, preferably within human resources or program management, while also support all areas of operations. The DO reports directly to the Managing Director of Operations, is part of a three person operations team, and works closely with the Management Team and program staff.

Operations and General Administration
Identify system gaps and propose solutions to improve operations across three sites
Design, implement, and maintain standard policies, processes, and procedures for operations including the continual maintenance of an operations manual

Support risk management strategies including insurance reviews and audits, coordinating student and staff safety, emergency procedure reviews, and background checks of all staff
Human Resources
Maintain a positive work culture that emphasizes our core values, professional development, retention, and ensures a high level of employee morale
Lead on monthly staff meeting coordination and bi-weekly full staff communications
As BTGB continues to grow, evaluate current policies and practices to ensure compliance as well as promoting best practices and making equity informed recommendations
In partnership with Management Team, develop processes and metrics that support and appropriately evaluate employee goals and performance
Manage payroll and benefits portfolio; oversee and continually enhances benefits with the goal of improving overall employee satisfaction and market competitiveness
Oversee all processes and systems supporting the employment lifecycle including but not limited to, recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding
Review employee and volunteer handbooks and trainings annually to ensure compliance with labor laws
Ensure timely report submission as required by federal and state laws
Program Operations
Support Campus Directors and program staff with program management including emergency planning, food services, transportation, student data, and procurement and inventory management
Oversee on-site program operations during After School Program and the Summer Program
Liaise with key program partners, including Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville Public Schools, local universities, and other community organizations to ensure strong and sustainable partnerships
Finance
Support day-to-day financial management, including but not limited to, the management of accounts payable, purchasing, and inventory management
Assist in the annual audit process
Technology

About Us and Our Philosophy
Breakthrough Greater Boston (BTGB) is a transformative college access and teacher training program. BTGB offers six years of academic enrichment and college preparation to middle school and high school students with high potential but limited opportunities. Simultaneously, BTGB recruits, trains and inspires a diverse cohort of high achieving college students to become the next generation of urban teachers. Leveraging a Students Teaching Students model, BTGB provides engaging, tuition-free academic programming during the summer and after school. Our students gain the skills and motivation to succeed in rigorous high school courses and, ultimately, in college. Meanwhile, our teachers gain hands-on experience, research-based training and coaching from professional educators.
Over the past eight years, 97% of our graduating students have matriculated to college, and 82% of them have persisted through their undergraduate years. On average, more than 70% of our graduating teachers have gone on to pursue careers in education. After two decades of success at our original Cambridge site, BTGB embarked upon a significant program expansion and opened a second site in Boston in the summer of 2013 and a third site in Somerville in 2018. As an independent 501c3 nonprofit, Breakthrough Greater Boston is part of The Breakthrough Collaborative, a national educational movement working to improve educational outcomes for youth across 25 U.S. cities.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Breakthrough Greater Boston is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented Director of Operations (DO) to ensure effective operational strategy and smooth day-to-day management including the oversight of essential systems and functions including finance, human resources, technology, business planning, facilities, and program operations management. As the organization continues to grow, the DO is responsible for ensuring that our processes and systems adapt and improve as the organization continues to evolve. The DO will have a primary area of focus, preferably within human resources or program management, while also support all areas of operations. The DO reports directly to the Managing Director of Operations, is part of a three person operations team, and works closely with the Management Team and program staff.
YOUR CONTRIBUTION
In this exciting role you will be responsible for a variety of critical operational responsibilities including:
Operations and General Administration
Identify system gaps and propose solutions to improve operations across three sites
Design, implement, and maintain standard policies, processes, and procedures for operations including the continual maintenance of an operations manual
Manage day-to-day operations of the organization
Support risk management strategies including insurance reviews and audits, coordinating student and staff safety, emergency procedure reviews, and background checks of all staff
Human Resources
Maintain a positive work culture that emphasizes our core values, professional development, retention, and ensures a high level of employee morale
Lead on monthly staff meeting coordination and bi-weekly full staff communications
As BTGB continues to grow, evaluate current policies and practices to ensure compliance as well as promoting best practices and making equity informed recommendations
In partnership with Management Team, develop processes and metrics that support and appropriately evaluate employee goals and performance
Manage payroll and benefits portfolio; oversee and continually enhances benefits with the goal of improving overall employee satisfaction and market competitiveness
Oversee all processes and systems supporting the employment lifecycle including but not limited to, recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding
Review employee and volunteer handbooks and trainings annually to ensure compliance with labor laws
Ensure timely report submission as required by federal and state laws
Program Operations
Support Campus Directors and program staff with program management including emergency planning, food services, transportation, student data, and procurement and inventory management
Oversee on-site program operations during After School Program and the Summer Program
Liaise with key program partners, including Cambridge, Boston, and Somerville Public Schools, local universities, and other community organizations to ensure strong and sustainable partnerships
Finance
Support day-to-day financial management, including but not limited to, the management of accounts payable, purchasing, and inventory management
Assist in the annual audit process
Technology
Ensure the technology needs of students, faculty, and staff are met and technology is maintained
Supervise technology information systems and manage relationship with IT consultant
Maintain file server
YOUR BACKGROUND AND QUALIFICATIONS
As the incoming Director of Operations, you will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:
Four years of experience with operations management or nonprofit administration with significant experience in finance, human resources, or program management, preferably in a school or education setting
An unwavering commitment to equity, in deepening your personal understanding and in advancing our collective work
Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with students, families and educators
Superior organization and project management skills
Ability to work on multiple projects, adjust quickly to shifting priorities, meet deadlines, exercise good judgment and handle high-pressure situations
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a variety of audiences
Team player who demonstrates a positive attitude, sense of humor, energy, entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to collaboration
Prior experience with Breakthrough model highly desirable; familiarity with partner schools or districts a plus
Flexibility that allows for periodic work on Saturdays and evenings

COMPENSATION
Breakthrough Greater Boston offers a competitive compensation package and is deeply committed to pay equity and transparency. The salary range for this position is $64,345-87,055; Breakthrough Greater Boston makes an offer based on relevant years of experience and does not negotiate salaries.
