Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking applicants for an Extension Program Assistant I that will work with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) through ISU Extension and Outreach in Polk County. Under general supervision, position assists in conducting extension education programs by extending information such as meal planning, money management, nutrition, human development, and citizenship to specifically identified audiences. This position requires modeling of healthy diet and exercise behaviors. The duties of this position require the ability to keep accurate records (written or electronic), communicate effectively with a variety of people, communicate clearly through virtual presentations, maintain strong communication through virtual means, speak and write in English, follow instructions and travel to various locations in order to conduct extension educations programs. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities • Prepares and presents lessons from a standardized curriculum to individuals or small groups either via in-person classes or virtual platform such as video chat or phone call . • Visits or connects virtually with agency partners and clientele within specifically identified audiences to involve them in individual or small group learning experiences. • Extends information through a variety of methods such as demonstrations, pamphlets, seminars, video conferences, phone calls, emails, etc. to clientele within specifically identified audiences. • Maintains appropriate records of participants progress and prepares reports. • Assists clientele by providing information on resources available in the community and making referrals. • Makes arrangements for meeting facilities (either in-person or virtually), sets dates and times for classes, collects and organizes educational materials, and makes appointments with participants. • Participates in regular conferences and training as scheduled either in-person or virtually. • Recruits program participants and volunteers. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of community resources. • Knowledge of issues and facts relating to the educational program. • Ability to read, understand and execute oral and written instructions. • Ability to keep accurate records. • Ability to communicate with a variety of people. • Ability to transport educational materials necessary for the job to the seminar site. Under general supervision, assumes the responsibility of machine and/or hand milking cows at prescribed milking times. Position is responsible for the proper storage and cooling of milk, care of equipment and facilities, cow care, and other farm related activities as assigned. Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities • Assembles milking equipment and connections to bulk tank. • At the prescribed starting time, prepares and milks cows. • Cools and stores milk in accordance with established procedures. • Exercises special care in observing, recording and reporting abnormal milk, udder and teat injuries. • Administers and applies medication as directed. • Rigorously excludes contaminated milk from sale for human consumption. • Follows approved sanitation, preparation, and clean-up procedures for cows, equipment, and facilities. • Requests new supplies as needed. • Monitors equipment involved with the entire milking process. • This may include, but is not limited to, such items as vacuum pump, pulsators, milk weight meters, milk cooling condensers, and post-milking teat dip dispensers. • Performs routine maintenance chores such as adding oil when needed. • Observes, reports, and/or attends to those cows exhibiting estrus, marked declines in daily milk production, failure to let down milk, illness, injury, or other deviations from normal behavior and well being. • Assists with sampling, tests, or data collection necessitated by research studies. • Cooperates with official testing supervisors to insure accurate sampling and recording of test day production. • Performs other chores associated with pre and post-milking time such as cleaning, feeding, checking watering devices, attending to sick cows, or attending to cows about to calve. • Responsible for the smooth functioning of the animal enterprise during the milking hours when other personnel may not be on hand. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of approved sanitation procedures for cows, equipment and facilities. • Knowledge of cow diseases, their symptoms, and treatments. • Skill in milking procedures and dairy animal care. • Ability to lift or transport 50 pounds and to stand on feet for long periods of time. • Ability to withstand noise, dust, odors, fumes, temperature and climate extremes. • Ability to cooperate with coworkers in all details contributing to the milking operation. The Department of Animal Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State University seeks applicants for an Agricultural Specialist I position at the Beef Nutrition Farm. This position serves under the direction of the Superintendent of the Beef Nutrition Farm. This position is responsible for working with the Farm Manager regarding the day-to-day operations of the Beef Nutrition Farm as well as for research oversight; research diet quality control; maintenance of research data integrity; collaboration with project investigators on research protocols; and oversight of daily beef care. In this role, the position is responsible for executing the short and long term business plans, driving the research needs forward and working with the manager to ensure success. The position is required to optimize the farms performance and collaborate effectively with PI’s and Graduate Students. Duties also include: maintaining building and facilities in a safe and appropriate manner; evaluating risk management activities; maintaining inventory control; developing preventative maintenance schedules; coordinating major maintenance and repairs; and collaborating with vendors. The successful candidate will possess a high level of business acumen in addition to agriculture knowledge in the areas of animal science, veterinary science, forage production, machinery operations and animal husbandry including disease management, nutrition, and behavior. Project and construction management, information technology, effective oral and written communication, mentoring, teamwork and time-management skills are essential in meeting the expectations of this position. All staff members are expected to interact collegially and maintain the highest standards of integrity and ethics. This is a full-time position. The incumbent must be a motivated self-starter and have the ability to work varying schedules which might include evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Work hours may vary and change based on farm requirements and weather conditions. This is a regular position with a term appointment, all accrued vacation must be used during term of appointment or will be forfeited. The University is in the process of implementing a new classification and compensation structure. The impending change is expected to be completed by Fall 2020. Any P&S employee hired through this posting may be assigned a new title and associated pay grade upon the employment start date (and after the initial offer), commensurate with qualifications required for the position.
