Position Classification: 3-Month unpaid Internship; March 1, 2025 – May 31, 2025, 2-days per week.
Internship Overview
The Conservation Engagement Internship is an opportunity to gain practical hands-on and educational experience at the world’s largest marine mammal hospital, The Marine Mammal Center. This internship will provide the candidate with educational training and support, obtaining knowledge and skills for best practices on educating the public about ocean health topics including ocean trash, sustainable seafood and climate change.
The Conservation Engagement Internship supports the daily operations of the Center’s public programs by providing excellent customer service, serving as a point of contact and resource to the Center’s Conservation Education volunteers, leading tours of the public exhibit areas, providing behind the scenes experiences, and engaging visitors in conversations about the Center's conservation work that enhance visitor experience and program impact.
Key Responsibilities
Participate in practical hands-on and virtual learning opportunities.
Support front of house operations and perform docent duties including greeting visitors, answering questions, handling transactions on the register, promoting the Center’s programs, and engaging with visitors about the Center’s work and mission.
Lead tours of public exhibits and behind the scenes areas.
Serve as a mentor and guide for Conservation Education volunteers to ensure highest quality visitor experience.
Support the Conservation Engagement team with education volunteer management and public program development and improvements as needed.
Support at the register with purchases, informing visitors about donation options (memberships, Adopt-A-Seal, etc.) and overall customer service.
Ensure a clean, well-stocked, and safe environment for visitors.
Participate in the creation and updating of education materials for staff, volunteer, and visitor use.
Qualifications and Experience
Must be at least 18 years old
High interest in environmental conservation and marine life.
Ability to work collaboratively and maintain open communication in a team environment.
Ability to provide exceptional customer service to diverse audiences.
Ability to use or ability to learn to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
Experience operating or ability to learn to operate a point of sales system such as a cash register, credit card reader, and associated hardware and software. (Preferred)
Have reliable transportation to and from the facility. Please note the Center is located in the Marine Headlands, an area that is not readily accessible by public transportation. (Required)
Willingness to work evenings and holidays as needed.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and climb stairs continuously for up to 3 hours.
Ability to remain in a stationary position and move around in an office environment for extended periods of time.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Ability to move up to 30 pounds.
Work Environment

The Response Apprentice will contribute meaningful support to the response & animal care of marine mammals at our San Luis Obispo Operations and the sea otter conservation program at The Marine Mammal Center. The 6-month apprenticeship provides a high-level view of community powered conservation while supporting the advancement of an inclusive environment within one of the world’s largest marine mammal stranding response programs.
Essential Functions:
Marine Mammal Response and Animal Care: 60%
Supports the San Luis Obispo operations with marine mammal response and animal care to facilitate an efficient stranding response program.
Communicate with Sausalito Dispatch team about incoming stranding reports and dispatch volunteer teams to local responses.
Complete data entry about all stranded animal calls, responses, patients, etc. into the Center’s custom-built animal database.
Participate and lead marine mammal rescues, releases, research, and other field work.
Participate and lead teams of volunteers to provide basic and advanced animal care for patients.
Coordinate logistics of patient transports to and from San Luis Obispo operations.
Assist with dead stranded marine mammal response, data collection, and necropsies as needed.
Sea Otter Conservation Program: 30%
Aids in the implementation of sea otter post-release data collection standards and management best practices.
Participate and lead training for staff and volunteers in sea otter post-release monitoring procedures.
Maintain and update sea otter response equipment to ensure safe capture.
Other Duties as Assigned: 10%
Perform special projects and research as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility:
Will be trained and become a crew supervisor responsible for training and managing volunteer crews in field response and triage care.

The 6-month apprenticeship provides a high-level view of community powered conservation while supporting the advancement of an inclusive environment within one of the world’s largest marine mammal stranding response programs.
Essential Functions:
Marine Mammal Response and Animal Care: 60%
Supports the San Luis Obispo operations with marine mammal response and animal care to facilitate an efficient stranding response program.
Communicate with Sausalito Dispatch team about incoming stranding reports and dispatch volunteer teams to local responses.
Complete data entry about all stranded animal calls, responses, patients, etc. into the Center’s custom-built animal database.
Participate and lead marine mammal rescues, releases, research, and other field work.
Participate and lead teams of volunteers to provide basic and advanced animal care for patients.
Coordinate logistics of patient transports to and from San Luis Obispo operations.
Assist with dead stranded marine mammal response, data collection, and necropsies as needed.

Participate and lead training for staff and volunteers in sea otter post-release monitoring procedures.

With direction from the Retail Manager, the Retail Assistant Manager assists with the upkeep of online product pages and photos. The Retail Assistant Manager is responsible for processing incoming merchandise and distributing stock between the sales floor, online store, and storage.
Essential Functions:
Retail Operations: 75%
Ensure smooth daily operations and exceptional visitor engagement.
Maintain visually compelling retail displays that connect customers with the Center’s mission and maximize revenue per square foot.
Assist in the development of strategies that boost visitation, engagement, and revenue.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment on the sales floor and storage areas.
Receive and process incoming merchandise. Based on seasonal sales trends, distribute merchandise between the sales floor and online store, ensuring accuracy of inventory records.
Greet visitors and engage them in the Center’s work and mission.
Process transactions, returns, and exchanges, resolving issues effectively and efficiently.
Work with the Retail Manager to develop and maintain standard operating procedures and ensure open lines of communication with staff and volunteers.
Process incoming inventory as it is received and distribute as needed.
Fulfill online orders and respond to customer inquiries.
In partnership with the Retail Manager, maintain online store webpages, ensuring that photos and information are accurate, relevant, and accessible.
Monitor supplies stock and communicate needs to the Retail Manager.

Connect with retail store volunteers and ensure a fulfilling and enriching volunteer experience.
Coach volunteers on store processes and customer engagement.
In partnership with the appropriate supervisors, identify and resolve issues related to volunteers.
In partnership with the Retail Manager, train and supervise eCommerce volunteers.

Complete daily cash drawer reconciliation and visitor tracking reports.
Complete weekly bank deposits

Job Summary:
The Cetacean Conservation Biology Senior Coordinator plays a key role in The Marine Mammal Center’s cetacean research and conservation program (Cetacean Conservation Biology (CCB)). The Senior Coordinator supports all aspects of the research program including the coordination of fieldwork and its participants, data management, and regular travel within our California range for field work. Fieldwork includes the research and response entangled whale events. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, field data collection at sea or land, coordination of project participant including volunteers/interns/staff, research equipment inventory and maintenance, data entry, data analysis, and timely communication with CCB team and internal and external partners. This role is instrumental in driving forward our research and conservation efforts aimed at protecting cetacean species and their habitats.

Research: 40%
Participate in data collection and data analysis under general instruction following standard research methodologies.
Participate in shore and boat-based field surveys, which includes data collection with Mysticetus software, photo-ID, drone operation, and other research methodologies.
Support research documentation, data management, and data request from collaborators in coordination with the CCB PI, research team, and the Research Committee.
Coordinate field surveys, participants, and logistics of fieldwork in collaboration with the CCB PI and research team.
Prepare reports and summaries on data being collected and progress of assigned projects.
Safely operate the Center’s vessels and assist other staff in the general upkeep of vessels.

Job Summary:
The Cetacean Conservation Biology Senior Coordinator plays a key role in The Marine Mammal Center’s cetacean research and conservation program (Cetacean Conservation Biology (CCB)). The Senior Coordinator supports all aspects of the research program including the coordination of fieldwork and its participants, data management, and regular travel within our California range for field work. Fieldwork includes the research and response entangled whale events. Support research documentation, data management, and data request from collaborators in coordination with the CCB PI, research team, and the Research Committee.
Coordinate field surveys, participants, and logistics of fieldwork in collaboration with the CCB PI and research team.
Prepare reports and summaries on data being collected and progress of assigned projects.
Safely operate the Center’s vessels and assist other staff in the general upkeep of vessels.

The Veterinary Technician Externship is an exciting opportunity for students in a Veterinary Technician Program and/or approved alternate route track to become a licensed veterinary technician who are interested increasing their technical skills, gaining experience and knowledge as a technician in veterinary medicine and leaning about the behavior, rescue, and rehabilitation of marine mammals. This externship works with our veterinary staff and the Center’s animal care volunteers to provide veterinary care for our patients, which consists of phocids, otariids, and the occasional cetaceans and sea otters.
Due to the cyclic nature of our patients, our Veterinary Technician Externships are available from February through September. Each externship opportunity may vary slightly depending upon our patient load and what opportunities are available. Program Overview
The Veterinary Anatomic Pathology Resident Rotation is an opportunity for anatomic and clinical pathology residents in established programs (traditional and non-traditional tracks) or those that have recently completed a program, to gain experience in marine mammal anatomy and pathology. Rotating residents will provide postmortem data on our patients and select carcasses, which consists of phocids, otariids, and the occasional cetacean and sea otter. During their time at The Marine Mammal Center, they will become familiar with marine mammal gross necropsy and histopathology including classic diseases.
This program requires a minimum of 2 weeks to maximum of 4 weeks duration and has openings year-round. The highest case load will be between March 1 and September 30 of 2025. (All slots for 2024 have been filled, with openings still available for 2025).
Shared housing near the Center MAY be available for a fee. Independent transportation is required; there is no public transportation to the Center’s hospital and guest housing. Those who are accepted into the program will be asked to submit a separate application for housing.
Key Responsibilities
Perform gross necropsies and write necropsy reports, trimming in cases, evaluating histology from cases and writing associated reports after review with the pathologist.
Opportunity to aid in gross necropsy instruction with veterinary students.
Qualifications and Experience
DVM, anatomic or clinical pathology resident in a pathology residency training program.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds throughout the primarily outdoor hospital for extended periods of time in variable weather conditions.
Ability to perform physical work requiring manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination.
Ability to remain in a stationary position and move in an office environment for extended periods of time.
Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
Ability to walk/cover up to 5 miles during a shift on a frequent basis.
Work Environment
Working in outdoor weather conditions and elements daily.
Exposure to sharp instruments and needles.
Risks associated with animal handling such as animal bites or scratches.
Potential exposure to formalin.
Potential exposure to allergens and zoonotic diseases.

Demonstrated interest in wildlife health and conservation and/or zoological animal medicine.

The Rescue and Response Dispatcher (Dispatcher) supports The Marine Mammal Center’s stranded animal rescue and response operations often as the first point of contact with the public. Calls from the public with reports regarding distressed marine mammals and sea turtles through The Marine Mammal Center’s hotline are answered by the Dispatcher who then supports and educates the caller, evaluates the needs of the animal, provides detailed documentation of the exchange, and coordinates volunteers for responses.
Essential Functions
Dispatch Hotline Support: 30%
Answer calls from the public, partner agencies, and others reporting distressed animals.
Gathers detailed information from callers about species, location, and situation.
Collaborate with callers, Dispatch team, volunteers, veterinary team, and others to assess animal remotely and determine need for a rescue.
Transfer appropriate calls to The Marine Mammal Center’s Field Offices in Moss Landing and Morrow Bays as needed, and support Field Office teams according to established procedures.

Job Summary
The Rescue and Response Dispatcher (Dispatcher) supports The Marine Mammal Center’s stranded animal rescue and response operations often as the first point of contact with the public. Calls from the public with reports regarding distressed marine mammals and sea turtles through The Marine Mammal Center’s hotline are answered by the Dispatcher who then supports and educates the caller, evaluates the needs of the animal, provides detailed documentation of the exchange, and coordinates volunteers for responses.
Essential Functions
Dispatch Hotline Support: 30%
Answer calls from the public, partner agencies, and others reporting distressed animals.
Gathers detailed information from callers about species, location, and situation.
Collaborate with callers, Dispatch team, volunteers, veterinary team, and others to assess animal remotely and determine need for a rescue.
Transfer appropriate calls to The Marine Mammal Center’s Field Offices in Moss Landing and Morrow Bays as needed, and support Field Office teams according to established procedures.
Educate the public about The Marine Mammal Center’s work and represent the organization positively.
Answer calls about volunteer opportunities, donations, and other general inquiries, and redirect as needed.
Animal Response, Release, and Transport Coordination: 30%
Remotely assemble teams of volunteers to complete stranded animal assessments, responses, and rescues.
Remotely support teams of volunteers while responses are in progress.
Remotely assist volunteers in assessing the animal’s condition, determining whether a pickup is needed, and deciding on the best course of action.
Coordinate multiple responses across California simultaneously.
Data Entry: 30%
Enter data about all stranded animal calls, responses, patients, and others into The Marine Mammal Center’s custom-built animal database.
Stay current with database updates to use the system accurately.

Job Summary
The Necropsy Technician will undertake various activities in support of the Pathology & Diagnostics team including gross necropsy, histopathology (trimming of cases), and support of the biobank archives. They will assist in the collection, analysis, storage, and shipment of samples for collaborative research projects as well as the training of pathology participants of the Teaching Hospital program and The Marine Mammal Center’s visitors.

Coordinate and perform necropsy in the laboratory including following and revising sampling protocols, specimen collection, data collection, performing necropsy, writing necropsy reports, and data entry.
Coordinate and perform large whale necropsy in the field including following and revising sampling protocols, specimen collection, data collection, performing necropsy, writing necropsy reports, and data entry.
Maintain necropsy equipment, supplies, and facilities to ensure the necropsy laboratory room is adequately supplied, clean, and safety procedures are established and followed.
Fulfill external and internal research projects through sample processing, data entry, and shipment.
Participate in current and historical data entry into database to ensure proper information is collected and available for monthly National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) reporting.
Maintain frozen tissue and fluid archives (biobank).
Manage and maintain pathology digital photo archive, including taking necropsy and histopathology photos in accordance with protocols and after training.
Histology: 15%
Act as liaison to coordinate on internal projects regarding pathology/histology-based specimens and data.
Trim wet (histopathology) tissues.
Maintain histology tissue, slide, and paraffin archives.
Ship cassettes to external labs for slide preparation or slides to external pathologists as required.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position operates in a professional office, laboratory, and hospital environment both indoors and outdoors with access to other parts of the facilities via outdoor pathways.

Job Summary
The Necropsy Technician will undertake various activities in support of the Pathology & Diagnostics team including gross necropsy, histopathology (trimming of cases), and support of the biobank archives. They will assist in the collection, analysis, storage, and shipment of samples for collaborative research projects as well as the training of pathology participants of the Teaching Hospital program and The Marine Mammal Center’s visitors.
Essential Functions
Necropsy: 70%
Coordinate and perform necropsy in the laboratory including following and revising sampling protocols, specimen collection, data collection, performing necropsy, writing necropsy reports, and data entry.
Coordinate and perform large whale necropsy in the field including following and revising sampling protocols, specimen collection, data collection, performing necropsy, writing necropsy reports, and data entry.
Maintain necropsy equipment, supplies, and facilities to ensure the necropsy laboratory room is adequately supplied, clean, and safety procedures are established and followed.
Fulfill external and internal research projects through sample processing, data entry, and shipment.
Participate in current and historical data entry into database to ensure proper information is collected and available for monthly National Marine Fisheries Services (NMFS) reporting.
Maintain frozen tissue and fluid archives (biobank).
Manage and maintain pathology digital photo archive, including taking necropsy and histopathology photos in accordance with protocols and after training.
Histology: 15%
Act as liaison to coordinate on internal projects regarding pathology/histology-based specimens and data.
Trim wet (histopathology) tissues.
Maintain histology tissue, slide, and paraffin archives.
Ship cassettes to external labs for slide preparation or slides to external pathologists as required.
Inputs data into database in accordance with standards set forth within the program.
Training & Educational Outreach: 10%
Assists with and/or trains Teaching Hospital Program participants and pathology visitors in gross necropsy skills and anatomy.
Assists with and/or teaches wetlabs to visiting university classes and youth crew.
Assists with managing Teaching Hospital Program materials regarding pathology.
Assist in scheduling and coordinating pathology visitors.
Assist with or present to donors or other behind-the-scenes visitors as needed.
