Job Description

2021 DDOT Internship Program

The intern will be developing a maintenance needs inventory and plan for the District's priority bikeway nework. There are over 60 miles of multi-use trails for bicyclists and pedestrian throughout the District, and over 16 miles of protected bike lanes. This network crosses jurisdictional boundaries between the District Department of Transportatation, National Park Service ad other government agencies and private entities. Trails and protected bike lanes through tthe District have different maintenance needs.

 

Project Description:

The Active Transportation Branch of DDOT's Planning and Sustainability Division needs a document that identified the bikeways in the District, the entity responsible for maintenance, the maintenance needs of each facility, and an identified maintenance division for each facility. The intern will review existing Memorandums of Understanding, easement, and other documents between DDOT and other groups to identify maintenance responsibility and needs throught the District. The intern will, with support from DDOT staff, be responsible for calling other agencies and DDOT divisions and documenting maintenance plans and needs. The intern will research and document other city bikeway maintenance plans, practicies, and costs. The intern will be expected to deliver a draft and final "DC Bikeway Maintenance Work Plan" document. The document will include a summary of the trail and protected bike lane maintenance needs and responsibilty for the entire network of trails in DC, including visual references such as maps and pictures. The document will also reference best practices from other peer cities.

 

Intern Skills

- The preferred candidates should ahve general knowledge of transportation planning or transportation engineering.

- Experience in reseach and analysis skills.

- Proficiency in presentation, visual display and communication of data, including GIS.

- Proficiency with the Microsoft Suite (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel)

 

Educational Background

- Graduate students in civil or environmental engineering, public policy or urban planning are preferred.

 

Biweekly stipends of $1,600. Applications due March 12th
