Job Summary

Thayer Academy seeks a compassionate, innovative, collaborative Middle School Counselor for the 2021-2022 academic year who is excited about engaging students in hands-on activities.  This Program Director will join a collaborative administrative support team.  Some of their responsibilities will include:  

  • Meet with individuals and groups to ensure overall emotional health and well-being of students
  • Communicate with teachers about specific students, advocate for students experiencing emotional or academic difficulty. Observe students in class when necessary.
  • Oversee advising program – write and refine curriculum, develop activities, make advising groups, support and counsel advisors.
  • Support parents regarding student issues such as social challenges, academic difficulties, mental illness, family circumstances, etc.
  • Collaborate with the Director, Dean of Students, and Middle School Director of the Hale Learning Center (HLC), including:
  • Design and teach courses Health/Wellness classes, such as 7th grade Decisions and5/6th Health.  (Meet once a week)

Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses a love of the middle school age child, is a team player who can work collaboratively with colleagues, and has at least 1-3 years counseling experience in a school or other educational setting.  A bachelor’s degree is required, and a master’s degree is preferred. 

In addition, the candidate should be able to demonstrate many  of the following: 

  • Experience in Design Thinking or Project Based Learning curriculum development
  • Knowledge of robotics and programming
  • Desire to engage in community science projects
  • Physical Science knowledge and experience
  • Commitment to working in and fostering an inclusive community 
  • Knowledge of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and the impact it has on the classroom climate and curriculum 
  • High levels of comfort and experience with technology 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students and families 
  • Curriculum design and assessment experience 

Work Hours:

This is a full-time position.
