Distinguishing Features of the Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Health, Co-Curricular Activities and Enrichment:

This position encompasses a wide array of responsibility for core physical education and health related initiatives, in order to meet the needs of an equally diverse population. The scope of administrative responsibilities is inclusive of district-wide athletics, curriculum and instruction, and enrichment. Foundational to the core beliefs is an understanding that when students participate in healthy activities through learning and participation, they are more likely to become successful students and ultimately graduates. The innate understanding of community, team work, healthy living, physical and emotional balance, supports the universal expectation that through a committed effort all students can achieve and be successful. Each student is valued and the support inherent in this leadership role can impact and change the trajectory of the students who attend the SCSD.

Typical Work Activities and Expectations:

  • Actively participate and engage with leadership, in support of district initiatives, professional development, goal setting, project management, mission alignment and leadership development
  • Develop and coordinate with teachers and coaches, in the development and implementation of activities related to the enrichment of health, physical, and athletic awareness

Athletics:

  • Collaborate and communicate regularly with families, community organizations, regional organizations and boosters to advocate, promote and enrich SCSD programs
  • Promote and support students through scholarships and coordination enabling them to participate in college level athletics, including understanding of NCAA eligibility requirements.
  • Collaboratively review and reinforce the Athletic Code Conduct to ensure and promote successful participation
  • Recruit, screen, hire and orientation of certified coaches and staff
  • Evaluate varsity athletic coaches, including the preparation of an end-of-season evaluation summary for each sport season (fall, winter, spring).
  • Support students in ensuring they meet the necessary medical requirements to participate ? Supervise and/or provide support for athletic event readiness, including inventory, maintenance and replacement of equipment, location preparedness, transportation and support personnel
  • Develop and create collaboratively an annual budget for athletics, physical and health education, co-curricular activities and enrichment; equitable coordinate and secure event and activity budgetary allocations
  • Responsible for coordination of supervision of all home athletic events.
  • Attend monthly Suburban Council Athletic Directors meetings.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Facilities/O&M the use and preparation of districtwide facilities for the purpose of interscholastic practices and games.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Facilities/O&M use and preparation of districtwide facilities for the purpose of community use.
  • Management and oversight of pool maintenance, usage, and promotion of pool utilization ? Coordinate with the Supervisor of Transportation the schedule for all athletic contests and practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of all athletic coaching certificates, and provide support to coaches in maintaining their certification.
  • Communicate regularly during the respective athletic season with all coaches on matters related to scheduling of practices and games, personnel, student-athletic performance, budgeting, community relations and other day-to-day operations.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of game officials for all interscholastic athletic home events.

Physical Education & Health

  • Collaborate with the Office of Educational Equity on matters of curriculum implementation and program evaluation, budget development and staff development.
  • Assist building administrators with observations and evaluation of instructional staff for the purpose of enhancement of instructional delivery and student performance.
  • Maintain knowledge of and assist physical education and health teachers with understanding and implementation of the New York State Learning Standards for physical education and health.
  • Evaluate and, as appropriate, recommend new instructional materials, methods and programs for physical education and health education instruction.
  • Assume a leadership role in developing curriculum for new mandates (state or district) for physical education or health education initiatives.
  • Coordinate department meetings with physical education and health teachers (on a regular basis) for the purpose of instructional continuity and articulation of curriculum.
  • Meet with the Director of Education Equity & Instructional Support, as scheduled, for the purpose of instructional continuity and articulation of curriculum.
  • Assist building administrators in the recruiting, screening, hiring and orientation of instructional staff.

Minimum Qualifications

  • SDL or SDA NYS Certification
  • Physical Education Teacher NYS Certification
  • 5 successful years teaching experience
  • Head coaching experience
