What you will do:

As a Park Ranger 2, you will be responsible for independently planning and carrying out personally, or by conducting teams of permanent/seasonal staff or Park Hosts, complex park maintenance and operation tasks to protect, maintain, operate and repair state park lands, natural and cultural resources, structures, facilities, equipment and systems by using skills in building trades, including carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting and landscape maintenance, as well as specialized program skills (e.g.: resource interpretation, cultural and natural resource restoration, utility infrastructure operation, park rule enforcement, etc.) related to the maintenance and operations of agency programs.

 

In this role, you will perform regular overnight river trips on the Deschutes River independently rowing a raft through Class III rapids with passengers. As part of river duties, you will clean, maintain and fix composting toilets that are along the river corridor. You will also enforce boater pass regulations and work collaboratively with diverse partners on river regulations.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Four years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR

Bachelor's degree in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies; AND One (1) year of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

OR

An Associate's degree in Park and Recreation Administration or Natural Resource Management or Environmental Studies; AND Two and a half (2.5) years of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping).

 

 

What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):

  • Experience in whitewater rafting up to Class III rapids as a guide or in professional setting
  • Experience enforcing boater regulations and inter-agency collaboration on enforcement
  • Willingness and experience in camping in remote back country areas
  • Experience in campground operations, leading reservation system operations and training.
  • Experience in park rule enforcement as demonstrated by successful completion of OPRD Visitor Safety Academy, in-service and re-certification trainings.
  • Ability to safely use of tools, material and equipment associated with landscape, building, facility and utility system maintenance.
  • Ability to perform basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, grounds keeping tasks.
  • Experience diagnosing maintenance and operation problems, breakdowns and disruptions; and in initiating and carrying out solutions.
  • Familiarity with “Verbal Judo” or similar tactical communications method.
  • Ability to maintain composure and taking appropriate action during emergency or emotionally-charged situations.
  • Knowledge of basic park resource and facility operations and maintenance and/or resource interpretation.
  • Experience evaluating situations, applying rules and guidelines, determining and carrying out appropriate course of action to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to lead individuals or a small group in accomplishing basic tasks.
  • Experience planning and organizing equipment, materials and staff to accomplish work.
  • Experience in promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
