About the position

 

Are you passionate about building authentic relationships, supporting tribally led initiatives, and safeguarding the Grand Canyon?

 

The Grand Canyon Trust is currently hiring a Grand Canyon Manager to help envision and implement various aspects of the Grand Canyon program, with an emphasis on safeguarding the Little Colorado River and its confluence with the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.  In this position, you would be….

 

  • the lead on the Little Colorado River Initiative, supporting this partnership with long-term visioning, logistics oversight, and contractor supervision.
  • a leader in maintaining respectful relationships with our partners in tribal communities, tribal governments, and within federal agencies
  • an equal thought leader alongside the Director and Associate of the Grand Canyon Program.

 

What does this position entail?

Program Management (60%):

  • Manage the Program’s short- and long-term strategies to safeguard the Little Colorado River including:
    • Strategically connect the Little Colorado River Initiative with local Native community members, tribal leaders, and organizations including the Save the Confluence Families to support Native direction in all Little Colorado River-related work.
    • Attend Little Colorado River Initiative and community meetings to advocate for long-term safeguards.
    • Manage Little Colorado River contractors and interns.
    • Lead event planning logistics and coordinate outreach events.
  • Assist Grand Canyon Program with planning and carrying out programmatic responsibilities including, but not limited to:
    • Planning and hosting the annual Emergence Economic Summit.
    • Support the Grand Canyon Associate in Intertribal Centennial Conversations Group-related tasks including the development of the educational tools and curricula.
    • Organize, manage, and follow up on requests from tribal leaders, or assigning pertinent staff to follow-up.
    • Research threats to the Grand Canyon as needed and support the Program Director in developing positions on issues as they arise.
  • Coordinate events in partnership with Native communities, artists or leaders (e.g. Red Butte Gathering, Rumble on the Mountain) and manage related budgets.

Relationship Cultivation (20%):

  • Sustain, grow, and develop new relationships with elected tribal officials, Native community members, and cultural and spiritual leaders in Native communities associated with the Grand Canyon. 
  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with conservation organizations and partners in other local and regional communities of potentially allied interests.

Additional/Other (20%):

  • Work closely with the communications team in cultivating media contacts and responding to interview requests; coordinate interviews with community partners and facilitate review process before publication; and contribute content and research as needed for effective external communications.
  • Support the Program Director and Development Program on Grand Canyon program fundraising, as needed.
  • Attend and participate in both on and off-site staff meetings and retreats and organizational training.
  • Seek out and participate in professional development opportunities.

 

Desired qualifications

  • A deep familiarity with and knowledge of the lands and peoples of the Colorado Plateau including previous work and/or lived experience based in or connected to Native communities.
  • A demonstrated commitment to following the needs and priorities of Native communities.
  • Must be accountable to others, oneself, and to the core values of the organization, including justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience in program management including budget management and supervision of others.
  • Experience in event planning.
  • The ability to inform, influence, and educate a variety of audiences using written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple projects and tasks with competing deadlines.
  • The ability to thrive in a setting where teamwork and collaboration is required.
  • Ability to execute and consistently follow through on ideas while working in the office or while in the field.
  • Ability to think creatively, strategically, and collaboratively to find solutions to challenges.
  • Willingness to travel (less than 25% of the time) on weekdays and occasional weekends.
  • Experience talking with the media and giving interviews is preferred.

Compensation

 

$49,000-$65,000 annual salary, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
