Salary Range (depending on experience): $102,000 - $150,000

General Description:

For more than 50 years, LCV has grown into a potent political force for protecting our planet and everyone who inhabits it. We have built a powerful national movement with 30 state affiliates, and grassroots and community organizing programs across the country. LCV and our state affiliates, collectively called the Conservation Voters Movement (“CVM”), has committed to building an anti-racist national network by advancing racial justice and equity in everything we do. This organizational work involves an active process of identifying racism and other interlocking forms of oppression as they exist in our policies, practices, and institutions; changing and applying internal policies and power dynamics in ways that work to eliminate systemic racial inequities; and, working to change societal policies and power dynamics to eliminate systemic racial inequities. 

LCV is seeking a Senior Director, State Racial Justice and Equity who will provide expertise on embedding racial justice and equity values into our collaborative work with 30+ state affiliates. The Senior Director will work as part of the State Capacity Building team to deepen our anti-racist approach to aligning the network’s strategies to our shared vision of building power that centers justice; developing and implementing ambitious and equitable advocacy campaigns for state and local climate, environmental, and democracy policy; providing organizational development support to state affiliates; and facilitating cross-network collaboration and learning so that staff and board members have the tools, skills, and capacity to work effectively across differences and within a multiracial movement. 

The ideal candidate is an experienced and effective leader, grounded in principles of racial equity and social justice; a creative thinker; and an effective collaborator and coach.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Senior Vice President of State Capacity Building and as a member of the State Capacity Building team to craft annual and long term plans for building the CVM’s capacity on racial justice and equity.
    • Create and manage plans that clarify multi-year and annual priorities, goals, strategies and success measures for our state racial justice and equity work. Partner with State Capacity Building staff to integrate racial justice and equity into all of our state programs. 
    • Collaborate with team members to build effective leadership, capacity, and skills internally to support each other and the CVM toward meeting its racial justice and equity goals. 
    • Supervise LCV’s State Partnerships Director who implements strategies to expand and deepen authentic, long-term partnerships between the CVM and communities of color, low-income communities, working families, and other communities most impacted by our issues.
    • Partner with the Chief Officer for Racial Justice and Equity to align CVM efforts in state affiliates with national LCV.
  • Provide state affiliates with a comprehensive array of organizational development services and resources on racial justice and equity, including consulting, coaching, skills training, tools, and templates, in partnership with the State Capacity Building team.
    • Facilitate education and learning opportunities to cultivate racial justice and equity competencies, including specific skills and behaviors, and coordinate the work of consultants supporting this work across the CVM.
    • Create tools and resources for supporting the integration of racial justice and equity into daily practices and train and coach CVM leaders on using them.
    • Collaborate with state affiliate partners to develop, track, and share success measures and lessons learned related to integrating racial justice and equity into internal operations (policies, practices, culture) and external programs (legislative advocacy, electoral campaigns, mobilizing, community organizing).
  • Travel up to 20% of the time for state affiliate training, staff retreats, meetings, conferences and professional development opportunities, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Work Experience:
    • Required - At least 8 years of organizational development experience as a member of, or advising leadership teams with an explicit focus on equity, inclusion, and justice, including:
      • Analyzing organizational programs, policies, and practices with ongoing collaboration, planning, and coaching of organizational leaders to translate racial justice and equity values into practice and measure progress toward organizational goals;
      • Supporting implementation of organizational change processes;
      • Developing tools to support employees at all levels to embed equity within their daily work and to guide and assess equity integration in projects;
      • Designing and facilitating education and learning – including multi-day training initiatives, in-person and online workshops, dialogues and reading groups, group identity caucuses, and affinity group opportunities;
      • Coaching leaders, managers, and staff at all levels on leading around equity, cultural competencies, giving and receiving feedback, and conflict resolution; and,
      • Planning and implementing ongoing efforts to create a thriving organizational and workplace culture and the behaviors necessary to support its ability to thrive.
    • Required - Must have demonstrated supervisory experience successfully managing high performing teams that are diverse by race, gender, and age. 
    • Preferred - Experience working with environmental justice or local/state environmental organizations working in low-income communities or communities of color a plus. 
  • Skills: Proven ability to recognize, analyze and address the implications of structural and institutional inequity, and interpersonal power dynamics in organizations. Excellent written and verbal communication, facilitation, and public speaking skills. Exceptional supervision and coaching skills, including managing staff. Outstanding administrative skills, including the ability to produce, track, and manage multiple deliverables with overlapping deadlines in a high-performing environment. Emotional intelligence, strong interpersonal skills, humor, humility, and compassion. Demonstrated ability to develop collaborative, productive, and respectful relationships with leaders of state-based organizations and grassroots, community-based organizations.
  • Cultural Competence: Demonstrated awareness of one’s own cultural identity, views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on varying cultural and community norms. Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. Understands how environmental issues intersect with racism, economic and social inequality in the U.S. and has a passion for working to dismantle these systems. Must share a commitment to advancing racial justice and equity and ensuring an inclusive organizational culture. Familiarity with the complexity of issues and obstacles facing communities’ of color engagement in the environmental movement. Commitment to social change.
  • Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment, and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and audiovisual systems. This position is largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods. The person in this position frequently communicates with partners and must be able to exchange accurate information.
