What We Can Achieve Together:

The Equitable Carbon Markets Specialist supports the development and implementation of the Global Carbon Markets Strategy at TNC. They help ensure equity within our carbon markets work, with a focus on elevating the leadership of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and/or smallholders in our carbon projects. They increase the overall quality of our carbon project portfolio by leading project components related to stakeholder mapping; social risk assessment; stakeholder engagement and Free, Prior, and Informed Consent; project governance; benefit-sharing arrangements; and culturally appropriate grievance redress mechanisms. The Equitable Carbon Markets Specialist liaises with other TNC staff, notably field colleagues, as well as external actors as applicable, to help drive the design and implementation of high-quality carbon market projects.

Reporting to the Global Lead on Equitable Carbon Markets, and integrated into TNC’s Global Carbon Markets Technical Team, the Equitable Carbon Markets Specialist will:

• Develop and facilitate the use of TNC tools, guidance, and standards to provide training and capacity building to TNC field offices and implementation partners in support of high-quality projects;
• Provide direct technical assistance to TNC field offices and implementation partners on integrating equity into TNC’s carbon projects, including supporting the development of project idea notes, feasibility assessments, and project design documents;
• Serve as a technical resource on equity in carbon markets to key internal and external partners;
• Stay up-to-date on carbon market trends and best practice to contribute to continuous improvement in TNC projects and liaise with standards bodies and other key actors to learn and share;
• Evaluate social risks of projects and recommend safeguards to avoid negative impact minimize risks;
• Assess TNC carbon projects at various stages of development to determine whether they meet internal and external standards and work with projects to fill any identified gaps;
• Lead efforts to monitor social impacts of our carbon projects across the global and gather data and stories to help communicate that impact; and
• Share relevant knowledge and lessons to improve carbon project quality by maximizing returns to communities and provide insights on the community dimensions of carbon projects and make recommendations to the team and other stakeholders.
• May involve domestic and international travel of around 20%.

What You’ll Bring:

• Bachelor’s degree in conservation, social science, anthropology, public policy, international relations, international development or related field and 4 years related experience, or equivalent combination.
• Experience working with carbon projects and/or conservation or development projects that include smallholders, local communities, and/or Indigenous Peoples.
• Experience researching, critically analyzing, and evaluating information from divergent sources and compiling it into cohesive reports and recommendations for strategy and action.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills in English.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
• Familiarity and knowledge related to carbon market standards (e.g., Climate Community and Biodiversity Standard, Plan Vivo, Verified Carbon Standard).
• Experience facilitating participatory processes with diverse sets of people.

Salary Information:

This position may be based in any country where TNC has an established entity, taking into consideration legal restrictions, such as non-national ratios and immigration processing times. For U.S. based applicants only, the starting pay range for this position is generally within the range of $80,000 - $100,000 for annual base salary and is based on location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. For all other applicants, pay ranges will be in local currency, the pay range will be based on the local labor market, and not tied to the above pay range. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment and used to determine your actual pay range. Additionally, for all applicants, actual pay will fall within a range based on a variety of factors including, for example, the candidate’s qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
