Oceana seeks a Pacific Marine Scientist to join a dedicated team of professionals who are working to protect and restore abundance to the oceans. This position helps play a critical role in advocating for science-based fishery management to restore the world’s oceans and reduce the impacts of climate change.
Founded in 2001, Oceana is the world’s largest nonprofit organization focused solely on restoring the resilience and abundance of the ocean. Oceana achieves measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals. Our campaigns focus on getting policy changes in countries that govern nearly one-third of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, Canada and the 27 countries in the European Union.
The Pacific Marine Scientist is a full-time position located in Oceana’s Monterey, California office. This position provides policy advocacy and scientific leadership to help achieve Oceana’s annual Pacific campaign goals. This includes working on fishery management, bycatch reduction, habitat protection, and climate change. The Pacific Marine Scientist provides scientific expertise for multiple projects, develops and implements campaign activities, and professionally represents Oceana in decision-making forums.
Applicants must have a college degree in a relevant discipline, such as marine biology, ecology, economics, policy analysis, oceanography, fisheries and wildlife conservation and biology, or natural resource management. The Pacific Marine Scientist will have strong scientific credentials and knowledge of state and federal commercial fishing issues, fisheries, management, bycatch, and stock assessments. Dedicated to protecting & restoring the world’s oceans on a global scale.
Oceana was established in 2001 by a group of leading foundations — The Pew Charitable Trusts, Oak Foundation, Marisla Foundation (formerly Homeland Foundation), and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
In 1999, these foundations commissioned a study and discovered that less than 0.5 percent of all resources spent by environmental nonprofit groups in the United States went to ocean advocacy — an appalling statistic. No organization was working exclusively to protect and restore the oceans on a global scale.
To fill the gap, our founders created Oceana: an international organization focused solely on oceans, dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and articulated goals.
The Ocean Law Project — also initiated by The Pew Charitable Trusts — was absorbed into Oceana in 2001 as Oceana’s legal arm. In 2002, Oceana merged with American Oceans Campaign, founded by actor and environmentalist Ted Danson, to more effectively address our common mission of protecting and restoring the world’s oceans.
Since its founding, Oceana has won nearly 200 victories and protected more than 3.5 million square miles of ocean.
