Job Description:

Make your career count! The American Red Cross is seeking a Grants Specialist who is responsible for increasing funding through United Way grants and foundations that fulfill the organization’s funding needs and mission.

This position will be responsible for working cross-departmentally to plan, research, write, and submit grants and proposals and maintain an accurate calendar to track critical tasks and deadlines. This position will also lend support to department operations and finances, donor cultivation events, donor recognition activities and volunteer management as needed. This is an hourly position. The candidate will need to be located within the region and travel as needed. This position is not primarily donor facing, but may support donor meetings upon request and need.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the research, coordination, writing, and submission for 30+ United Way grants in the Illinois Region, in collaboration with our Executive Directors who oversee these partnerships.
  • Provides guidance and leadership to streamline the grant process and increase financial support for the American Red Cross.
  • Provides strategic vision, tools, resources and training to help Red Cross fundraisers grow their expertise in grants and grant management.
  • Supports foundation and grant research to identify new opportunities for the organization’s funding needs.
  • Provides coordination, logistical and relationship support as needed for the grantor’s annual giving campaigns, whether foundation or corporate workplace campaigns. This would entail handling meetings logistics, creating effective communication plans for special events, developing resources, training programs and group calls, coordinating production and tracking responses, etc.
  • Supports the fundraising team in other duties related to donor stewardship, cultivation and solicitation communications, events, and activities.
  • Fulfills critical communications function during times of episodic disaster. Supports the team as needed in implementing our Disaster Fundraising Action Plan. 

What you will need:

  • Education: High School or equivalent required. 

  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and related experience required.

  • Skills & Abilities: Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.  Basic proficiency in use of Personal Computer, word-processing, spreadsheet applications, and database applications when applicable.  Ability to work on a team.
    Travel: May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout chapter jurisdiction, state and Red Cross system.

  • Proven ability to write a succinct, professionally written narrative with current facts and stories relevant to the foundation and requesting grant. (writing sample will be requested)
  • Experience with online research tools such as the Foundation Director Online and ALICE research reports preferred.

* Combination of candidate’s education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description’s minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).

The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  The work environment will consist of moderate noise (i.e. business office with computers, phones and printers, light traffic).  The employee must have the ability to work in a small cubicle and have the ability to sit at a computer terminal for an extended period of time.
