Job Description

Student Trainees will receive opportunities for learning in a professional work environment that focuses on transit career-related fields. The vision of success is to provide student Trainees the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience and build leadership skills. Participants in the program will be exposed to the Federal work environment and will learn the mission of the Federal Transit Administration and its role and responsibilities to the public transportation industry.

The Student Trainee (Community Planner) Pathways Intern will:

  • Monitor the state and metropolitan transportation planning process to ensure that an effective and efficient transportation program is developed which is consistent with local, state and Federal objectives. 
  • Administer the joint FTA/FHWA transportation planning regulations for assigned areas and provides technical planning assistance to other regional staff and grantees.
  • Review assigned Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) Transportation Improvement Programs (MTIPs) and Long Range Plans as well as the review and recommendation for approval of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program and Annual Element.
  • Develop and prepare approval recommendations for planning, capital and operating grants, and assure that applications meet all FTA legal, regulatory and policy requirements.
  • Meet and negotiate with representatives of local governments, transit operators, MPOs and the public on the scope of improvements to be funded and FTA policies and procedures.
