DER seeks an experienced professional to join our team as an Ecological Restoration Planner within the Technical Services Branch. The Technical Service Branch provides restoration planning, engineering assistance, knowledge management, and other services in support of DER’s restoration programs, operations, and communications.
The Ecological Restoration Planner develops and employs restoration planning and GIS capabilities to support the work of DER’s programs and partners. They will develop and oversee restoration planning, lead and support planning projects, and cultivate the Division's expertise, resources, and collaborations in these areas. The position will support the planning needs for a diverse range of restoration activities, including wetland restoration, river and stream continuity, dam removal, retired cranberry bog restoration, and regional restoration partnerships. The outcomes of this work will build DER and partner capacity to identify and pursue high-value restoration opportunities at the landscape level and increase the pace, scale, and impact of restoration throughout Massachusetts.
The Ecological Restoration Planner will be based in DER’s Boston office; the position will follow a hybrid schedule, consisting of in-office and telework. In-state travel to meetings and site visits is required.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
These duties will be carried out in collaboration with DER’s Restoration and Operations sections, Department IT staff, and other Division staff.
Lead and Support Ecological Restoration Planning (50%)
Identify and prioritize Restoration Planning (RP) and GIS needs.
Lead and support team-based RP and GIS projects that advance the priorities of DER programs and external partners.
Develop a geospatial data management system for the Division and provide staff guidance and training for its use.
Develop GIS datasets and user interfaces that allow staff to easily access, query, and generate analyses, reports, and other outputs for DER’s restoration projects and other activities; ensure datasets are kept up-to-date and integrated with DER’s restoration project tracking system.
Provide and support GIS analysis tools and outputs to assist the evaluation and selection of proposals submitted in response to DER restoration project procurements.
Assist DER programs and external partners in the selection, development, and implementation of landscape-level RP, modeling, GIS analysis, and structured decision making (SDM) methods and tools to evaluate restoration needs; establish restoration goals; identify, assess, and prioritize restoration opportunities; develop implementation plans; and track and communicate restoration progress.

We are seeking an entry-level professional to join our off-grid energy access team. The position will support administrative and research tasks including coordination with solar product manufacturers, data input and maintenance, and technical test report review and analysis. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) position, and is anticipated to start in July 2023.
This position will substantially contribute to our work on off-grid energy access. For context, more than 1 billion people worldwide are currently unable to access reliable grid electricity. Modern off-grid solar products help support these communities by providing clean and reliable energy for homes, farms and small businesses, and local facilities including schools and health clinics. As the technical lead for the VeraSol program, our off-grid energy access team develops and implements international test protocols for quality assurance to ensure that solar products and appliances are safe, durable, reliable, and perform as advertised. We work closely with national governments, manufacturers, and nonprofit organizations seeking to provide energy access and resilience across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. To date, over 65 million off-grid solar products that were certified through the program have been sold, benefitting well over 100 million people.
We work in a hybrid environment that supports flexibility and connection. Our team members currently have the option to work on site all the time or alternate between working remotely and at least 25% onsite at the Schatz Center. During the initial onboarding period, the team member could telecommute, but ultimately will need to live within commuting distance of the Schatz Center.

Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen
The Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) is looking to fill two 100 and 200 Area Specialist (Environmental Specialist 4) (In-Training) Positions. These positions will be located in our Richland Field Office (RFO) in Richland, WA . Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station. In these roles, you will work with the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and their contractors on the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater for the Hanford Site. The challenge of these positions is evaluating the proposed methods of cleanup for the contaminated soil sites which are over 200 potential waste sites and to work with the Ecology staff hydrogeologists for evaluating the cleanup of groundwater. The area of contaminated groundwater covers several square miles. The work is challenging but also rewarding to assist in the cleanup of the most polluted site in the United States. Agency Mission: Ecology's mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land, and water for the benefit of current and future generations. Duties
What makes these roles unique?
In this role, you will lead reviews and recommend approval for 100 or 200 Area project documents. You will also develop Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) decision documents to achieve cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Facility in accordance with state and federal regulations. This position assists the ER PM in regulatory analysis of proposed cleanup actions/remedies prepared by the United States Department of Energy (USDOE) and its contractors. What you will do:
Lead project staff on review of Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) work plans.
Perform independent environmental review of plans and specifications, and site plans.
Provide regulatory analysis and writing support to the review and evaluation of the existing and proposed cleanup plans for the Hanford site.
Make recommendations for enforcement actions.
Interpret state Dangerous Waste Requirements, RCRA, Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA), and CERCLA regulations; agency and program policies; and technical guidelines and procedures for environmental control and management of Hanford waste sites and facilities and other facilities regulated by the Nuclear Waste Program.

Required Qualifications: This is an In-Training position . T he goal class for this position is an Environmental Specialist 4 (ES4). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the ES4 or the ES3 levels. The Nuclear Waste Program (NWP) is looking to fill two 100 and 200 Area Specialist (Environmental Specialist 4) (In-Training) Positions. These positions will be located in our Richland Field Office (RFO) in Richland, WA . Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station. In these roles, you will work with the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and their contractors on the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater for the Hanford Site. The challenge of these positions is evaluating the proposed methods of cleanup for the contaminated soil sites which are over 200 potential waste sites and to work with the Ecology staff hydrogeologists for evaluating the cleanup of groundwater. The area of contaminated groundwater covers several square miles. The work is challenging but also rewarding to assist in the cleanup of the most polluted site in the United States. Agency Mission: Ecology's mission is to protect, preserve and enhance Washington's environment and to promote the wise management of our air, land, and water for the benefit of current and future generations. What makes these roles unique?
In this role, you will lead reviews and recommend approval for 100 or 200 Area project documents. You will also develop Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) decision documents to achieve cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Facility in accordance with state and federal regulations. This position assists the ER PM in regulatory analysis of proposed cleanup actions/remedies prepared by the United States Department of Energy (USDOE) and its contractors. What you will do:
Lead project staff on review of Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS) work plans.
Perform independent environmental review of plans and specifications, and site plans.
Provide regulatory analysis and writing support to the review and evaluation of the existing and proposed cleanup plans for the Hanford site.
Make recommendations for enforcement actions.
Interpret state Dangerous Waste Requirements, RCRA, Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA), and CERCLA regulations; agency and program policies; and technical guidelines and procedures for environmental control and management of Hanford waste sites and facilities and other facilities regulated by the Nuclear Waste Program.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications: This is an In-Training position . T he goal class for this position is an Environmental Specialist 4 (ES4). We will consider applicants who meet the requirements for the ES4 or the ES3 levels. If the finalist meets the requirements at the ES3 level, then they will be hired as an ES3 and will be placed in a training program to become an ES4 within a specified period of time. What you will do as a Cap-and-Invest Outreach and Education Specialist:
Provide education and outreach about Climate Commitment Act and Cap-and-Invest program to Tribal governments, local, state and federal agencies, the State Legislature, covered entities, stakeholders and the general public.
Assess outreach and education needs for a wide variety of stakeholders, program participants, and other external participants, and plan and execute outreach and education efforts to address those needs.
Facilitate effective and adaptive statewide stakeholder outreach: organize and facilitate public meetings, workshops, and other opportunities for public participation on statewide Cap-and-Invest projects and initiatives.
Advise Climate Commitment Act Implementation Manager and top management on education and community outreach opportunities and issues and assist in formulating program policy.
Plan and present at community events, forums, workshops, and listening sessions about climate and air quality rulemaking activities.
Serve as liaison with local, state and federal agencies, Tribes, community groups, and other stakeholders on Cap-and-Invest program-related information and updates.
Document stakeholder needs and concerns and advise program management on education and outreach needs related to rulemaking.
Develop outreach and educational materials, including written materials, online content, video production, presentations, and social media targeted to various internal and external audience needs.

The District Engineer is assigned to the Division of Support Services, Operations Engineering Staff within the Roseburg District.
