ABOUT THE POSITION
Our Director, Corporate and Foundation Partnerships will play an important role building external partnerships that position Making Waves to increase college and career opportunities and outcomes for underrepresented students in the Bay Area. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, you will be responsible for 1) leading the year-to-year strategy and execution of corporate partnerships, 2) managing a portfolio of institutional funders, 3) retaining, upgrading, and diversifying our base of corporate and foundation partners.

A competitive base salary range of $102,672-154,008 based on requisite work experience and performance during the interview process. We intend to hire a candidate who fully meets or exceeds the qualifications for this role, so we expect to offer a base salary in the top half of the salary band.
In line with our commitment to equity, fairness, and transparency, we do not negotiate salaries.
Signing bonus of 5% of base salary to be paid in two installments: 50% on the first eligible payroll and 50% within 6 months of the hire date.
51 total days off per fiscal year (a combination of company-paid holidays, vacation, sick, and personal time).
100% employer paid medical (Kaiser HMO Platinum), vision, and dental benefits for the full-time staff member and a spouse/domestic partner or dependent child(ren).
Occasional paid staff lunches and free access to Grubhub+, 3% retirement match, a $750 HSA account to help fund mental health benefits, FSA for medical and childcare expenses, and an annual professional development stipend.
A hybrid work environment where you will work from the office on five (5) common days and up to 3 additional days for Leadership Team meetings a month, with flexibility to work remotely otherwise. In-person meetings with donors will also be required as part of relationship building and donor cultivation and stewardship efforts. We provide a monthly wi-fi reimbursement and a home set-up stipend to set staff up to successfully work remotely.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director, Corporate and Foundation Partnerships’ primary responsibilities include:
Corporate Partnerships Strategy and Execution
Craft and execute an overall annual and long-term vision for Corporate partnerships, including strategies and campaigns for retaining and upgrading current donors, securing new donor investments, and strengthening pathways for Making Waves Academy and college students to pursue postsecondary opportunities
Conduct regular analysis of quantitative and qualitative data to inform ongoing priorities and adjust course where needed in order to ultimately meet ambitious annual goals aligned with organization OKRs and strategic plan
Funder Cultivation and Stewardship
Source, cultivate, and steward a portfolio of high-capacity corporations and foundations by developing and executing tailored cultivation and engagement plans
Develop and maintain fluency in Making Waves Education Foundation and Making Waves Academy programs and operations
Strategically leverage the CEO, Chief Development Officer, board members, and other senior leaders to steward and engage donors, including preparing these individuals for successful funder interactions
Compose tailored grant narratives, pitches, and employee engagement opportunities for high-stakes corporate and foundation donors, including reports, proposals, and donor correspondence
Collaborate with Making Waves Academy team to cultivate/steward current and prospective corporate and foundation funders
Maintain up-to-date donor records for relationships to ensure accuracy of account information, interaction history, and proposal/report submissions
Assess Bay Area corporate and foundation philanthropy landscape through research and prospecting databases, identifying and qualifying new and lapsed funders for outreach and cultivation efforts
Contribute to important cross-functional projects
Serve as a member of the Leadership Team
Participate in organization-wide systems, processes, and rituals (e.g., annual and quarterly goal setting, employee engagement surveys, All Hands); commit to providing feedback to improve our work in the future.
Contribute to the development of a growing, fast-paced organization, including participation in events and programming as well as database and technology oversight and maintenance.
Prioritize professional growth by researching, scheduling, and participating in professional development opportunities in service of your professional growth and impact on the organization.
KEY EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
What you’ve accomplished (required):
5+ years of experience in nonprofit leadership or institutional fundraising with a proven record of achieving ambitious goals
Prior experience working in K-12 education, external partnerships, or strategy highly preferred
Knowledge of Salesforce CRM preferred but not required
Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university

Making Waves Education Foundation is an education nonprofit that students historically underserved and underrepresented to pursue college and career pathways that set them up for a thriving career, financial independence, and a choice-filled life.
We support Making Waves Academy (MWA), a 5-12 grade public charter school in Richmond, CA. After high school graduation, each of our students (we call them “Wave-Makers”) is invited to join our college success and early career program, where they can receive a need-based scholarship, one-to-one college coaching, and financial literacy training. Each year, we support over 1,200 5th – 12th graders and over 500 college students on their journeys to and through college. YOUR EXPERIENCE

SALARY AND BENEFITS

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Washington, DC-based salary range for this position is $155,000 - $200,000 (will be adjusted for cost of labor for the incumbent's work location) annually, commensurate with experience. Making Waves Foundation is an education nonprofit that supports historically underserved and underrepresented students to pursue college and career pathways that set them up for a thriving career, financial independence, and a choice-filled life.
We support Making Waves Academy (MWA), a 5-12 grade public charter school in Richmond, CA. After high school graduation, each of our students (we call them “Wave-Makers”) are invited to join our college success and early career program, where they can receive a need-based scholarship, one-to-one college coaching, and financial literacy training. Each year, we support over 1,200 students grades 5-12 and over 500 college students on their journeys to and through college. Making Waves Foundation is an education nonprofit that supports historically underserved and underrepresented students to pursue college and career pathways that set them up for a thriving career, financial independence, and a choice-filled life.
We support Making Waves Academy (MWA), a 5-12 grade public charter school in Richmond, CA. After high school graduation, each of our students (we call them “Wave-Makers”) are invited to join our college success and early career program, where they can receive a need-based scholarship, one-to-one college coaching, and financial literacy training. Each year, we support over 1,200 students grades 5-12 and over 500 college students on their journeys to and through college. At the end of 2020, UWCCR received a “game changer” donation of $10 million from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott. The new President and CEO is coming into a well-resourced organization, one that is seeking new leadership to leverage this incredible gift.
United Way California Capital Region is an independent local affiliate of United Way Worldwide with a local board of directors. United Way Worldwide is an international movement of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 40 countries. It advances the common good by focusing on education, income, and health – the building blocks for a good quality life. The United Way movement mobilizes millions to action – to give, advocate and volunteer – to improve conditions in their local community.
Founded nearly 100 years ago to improve people’s lives and build stronger communities in the capital area, UWCCR continues to be a backbone in the community, serving as a leader amongst nonprofits. POSITION SUMMARY
The President and CEO reports to an engaged, dedicated, and high energy 25-member Board of Directors, comprised of regional community members and business leaders. The position oversees 39 staff members, an operating budget of approximately $7 million, assets of $19 million, and is projected to raise $9 million in the current budget cycle. In 2018-19, UWCCR generated nearly $13 million in resources for the communities it serves.

The Director of the Office of the President is a key partner to the President and CEO, focusing time on the highest priority strategic initiatives to advance of the Federation’s mission. This position provides executive support and manages the day-to-day operations of the Office of the President (OP). The Director is welcoming and equitable in access to the President and CEO, collaborating with staff across the organization, and engages regularly with Board members, affiliates, donors, external partners, government and administration officials, and the general public.
The Director reports to the President and CEO and supervises an Executive Assistant who assists with scheduling, meeting preparations, correspondence, and expense reports.
In this role you will:
Lead Operations: Responsible for the day-to-day operations, work flow and quality control of the Office of the President, including supervision of and close coordination with the Executive Assistant. Oversees the President and CEO’s calendar and travel planning, the preparation of meeting materials and briefings, the timely completion and submission of expense reports and relationship management inputs, and the completion of various signature requests. Supports the organization’s Executive steering committee. Convenes standing check-ins with key staff to operationalize the President and CEO’s calendar, harmonize workflows, clarify deliverables, and address urgent priorities.
Support Scheduling: Ensures adequate time is given to strategic priorities of the President and CEO. Prioritizes internal and external equity and justice efforts and anti-racism meetings, events and trainings. Assists in prioritizing speaking and travel requests and interacts with internal and external colleagues at all levels to finalize logistics. Partners with colleagues in Philanthropy in managing the President and CEO’s portfolio of donors and prospects, dedicating sufficient time for relationship building and implementing engagement strategies.
Budget Management: Administers the budget for the Office of the President with input from the Executive Assistant. Responsible for monitoring and adhering to the budget, iBudget (NWF's internal budgeting system) entries, and financial reporting and reprojections.
OP Communications: Responsible for communications from the President and CEO. Works collaboratively with staff across the organization to finalize various collaterals sent on behalf of or under the signature of the President and CEO, including funding proposals and reports, fundraising appeals, invitations, etc. Entails light writing of correspondence from the President’s Office and editing of material produced by others. Consistently takes special care to correct white supremacy culture language in correspondence going out over the President and CEO’s signature. Coordinates with the Executive Assistant to finalize correspondence. Maintains and monitors the public ‘President’ email account, responding to emails to this account as appropriate and redirecting emails to others for action and response as necessary.

Fundraising and Relationship Management: Assists the President and CEO in effectively managing a portfolio of major funders, prospective supporters, and key partners. Works closely with the Chief Development Officer and other Philanthropy and Program staff on a range of fundraising and prospect cultivation activities. Also partners with the Senior Manager of Meetings and Governance and other key staff in building and managing relationships with volunteer leaders comprising the Federation’s governance structures. Ensures the President and CEO’s activities are well documented in CRM.
Experience: Strong administrative and communications skills coupled with experience in executive offices in government, non-profits, or business or other high-functioning and public-facing environments will serve this role well. The Director is a capable manager and teambuilder/team player, adept in delegation, communication, coordination, and follow through.
