Job Description

PURPOSE  

The full-time, awake Overnight Shelter Staff works to support the 24/7 services at The Landing, a shelter that provides services to young adults experiencing homelessness. The Overnight Shelter Staff position is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and supportive shelter program, and will uplift the caring and non-judgmental environment that is provided to young adults.  

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Ensure a safe, caring, non-judgmental environment for the young adults, while respecting differences in the young adults’ cultural identities, social identities, religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, and gender identities.   
  • Guide the check-in and intake processes for all young adults coming to The Landing.   
  • Provide structure and guidance with cooking, serving, and cleaning up meals; monitor laundry and use of the showers.    
  • Conduct regular security checks of the facilities and monitor whereabouts of young adult guests.   
  • De-escalate conflicts between young adults as they arise, and report extraordinary changes in young adults’ behavior or situation to Program Coordinator.   
  • Maintain guest records in Youth Force database, ensure the Landing Shelter Tracker is updated weekly, and perform WATCH background checks are completed for new and returning young adults.  
  • Foster a healthy team environment by working collaboratively and communicatively with fellow shelter staff team. 
  • Attend all HYS, Case Consult, and Landing Staff Meetings; complete weekly check-ins with Program Coordinator to ensure consistency in programming and services. 

QUALIFICATIONS  

  • Experience working with young adults; experience working with young adults who are experiencing homelessness is preferred. (Lived experience with homelessness or street culture can be supplemented for work experience or education.)  
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, social work, or related field is preferred.  
  • Demonstrates an appropriate maturity level to supervise and support young adults. 

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS  

$20.28 per hour + $2,000 signing bonus*. Friends of Youth offers a competitive benefits package that includes:

SCHEDULE  

Shifts are 8 pm to 8:30 am three days per week (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), in addition to training and/or supervision attendance for up to 2.5 hours each week. Work takes place onsite/in-person in Redmond, WA. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES  

  • Engages with diverse populations in a culturally responsive manner, and demonstrates a commitment to the values of equity and inclusion by honoring and celebrating diverse characteristics and expressions of personal identity.  
  • Ability to develop positive relationships with young adults and act as a role model.  
  • Ability to observe and discuss behavior problems and suggest appropriate alternatives.  
  • Ability to work with young adults experiencing co-occurring disorders such as mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Ability to work in a setting that can be highly stressful and maintain professional boundaries with clients while building trust and respect.  
  • Ability and willingness to stay awake and alert during overnight shifts.  
  • Ability to verbally and physically respond to an aggressive person in ways that de-escalate, establish and maintain staff and young peoples’ safety.  
  • Knowledge of relevant Eastside resources.  
  • Ability to provide Trauma Informed Care and Harm Reduction services to shelter guests and demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of clients in crisis.  
  • Ability to interact with volunteers and provide leadership, and work collaboratively with other staff, community partners and law enforcement.  
  • Demonstrates an appropriate maturity level to supervise and support young adults. 
  • Ability to perform CPR and First Aid and to administer Naloxone, if needed (training provided).

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT  

  • Must satisfactorily pass criminal background check.  
  • Must satisfactorily pass tuberculosis (TB) test.  
  • Must successfully complete the following health certification requirements within 30 days of employment: CPR, First Aid and Bloodborne Pathogens training, Food Handlers Permit. 
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (or approved medical/religious exemption request).
