Job Summary

 

This is senior-level traffic engineering work and administrative activities for the Department of Public Works’ Transportation Division. This position performs the highest level of traffic engineering work and serves as a key contact for citizens regarding traffic engineering issues.

 

CLASSIFICATION DISTINCTIONS

 

The Traffic Engineer requires specialized knowledge in traffic and transportation engineering and requires the use of independent judgment to resolve complex or unique problems. The position provides senior traffic engineering guidance to other engineers within the division.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

 

Filling as a Traffic Engineer classification

 

Bachelor’s degree in traffic engineering, civil engineering or a closely related field – and – two (2) years of experience in traffic engineering or as an Engineer III or equivalent position.

 

Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of Washington, or ability to obtain within six (6) months;

 

Underfilling as an Engineer II classification

 

B.S. degree in Civil or related Engineering and two (2) years experience in an Engineering I classification or equivalent.

 

- OR -

 

High School diploma or G.E.D. and four (4) years relative engineering work experience to include a minimum of two (2) years experience in an Engineering I classification or equivalent and possession of an E.I.T. certification

 

Driver License verification and license abstract checks will be performed prior to final selection as an Engineer II or as a Traffic Engineer.

 

Knowledge of: Basic engineering principles, practices, physical and mathematical sciences (trigonometry and geometry), traffic operations, MUTCD and WSDOT standards.  Principles and practices of traffic engineering, civil engineering and of the physical sciences (hydraulics, mechanics, etc.) involved; urban and rural public sector traffic engineering and traffic signal design; proven project management skills, including engineering, administration and management principles/ practices; application and interpretation of County regulatory codes, state regulatory and legislative requirements, court decisions and Attorney Generals opinions concerning the wide variety of engineering functions; departmental policies and procedures, work standards and codes applicable to the job.
