WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview): The Disaster Health Services (DHS) Service Associate (SA) provides a range of healthcare activities and assistance to individuals and families who have been impacted by a disaster. 

This position is located in the North Florida area and involve a team itinerating between the Lecanto, Port Richey, St. Petersburg and Tampa areas where our clients are located in non-congregate settings such as hotels or other service delivery sites. Transportation (i.e., rental cars) will be available for the employee’s use within these areas, during work hours.

Salary: $1,500/week. 

This position is a temporary assignment expected to last 3-12 months.  It requires a 40-hour work week which may be conducted over a 4 or 5 day per period. Weekend availability may be required. The position also requires periodic overnight on-call coverage which may be rotated throughout the team members.

The American Red Cross Disaster Health Services program is an RN-led model of care provided in a community setting.  The primary purpose of the program is to provide supportive, assistive care and is unique in that it allows healthcare professionals to use their skills in assessment, care, teaching, coaching, and coordinating recovery to promote and achieve an optimal level of health for a client after disaster. Disaster Health Services workers promote client independence and resiliency.

Key Responsibilities:   

  • Provide health education, health assessments and when necessary, a determination if a higher level of care is needed beyond what can be provided in a shelter environment.

  • Assist clients to replace medications, durable medical equipment, or consumable medical supplies. 

  • Advocate for clients’ healthcare needs and assist clients in connecting with community-based healthcare services and resources.

  • May provide hands on care for shelter clients to include but not limited to assistance with activities of daily living, minor wound care, incontinence care, and assistance with functional needs.  

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications): 

Education: Bachelor’s degree OR a combination of education and work experience in a healthcare related field. 

Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in a clinical setting, or equivalent combination of education and related experience required. 

  • A current, unencumbered license in at least one of the following professions: 

  • Registered Nurse (RN) highly preferred 

  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

Training: Red Cross Basic Life Support or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (Proof of certification if previously trained); Red Cross Disaster Health Services and other Red Cross associated training will be provided on the job.

MUST BE Computer literate and understand basic programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, & and familiarity with web-based systems. 

Travel: A valid Driver's License is required. 

Physical requirements may include the ability to sit or stand for long periods and adapt to long, irregular hours, and frequent schedule changes are required.

  • Ability to stay calm in chaotic situations.   

  • Ability to lift/carry 30lbs. multiple times per shift.
