Job Description

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters (LCV) — one of Michigan’s largest, most impactful political advocacy organizations tackling drinking water contamination, the rapidly-worsening impacts of climate change, and efforts to undermine our access to the ballot — is seeking a dynamic full-time Membership Manager to drive the organization’s membership recruitment and retention as well as small dollar donations.

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with experience in using a CRM, managing and using a database, executing small dollar fundraising campaigns, and using digital media to grow an audience. This position offers the opportunity to lead membership engagement strategy in collaboration with the Communications, Development, and Advocacy & Outreach departments. This position, alongside a team of tenacious colleagues, will advocate for strong environmental protections, and build and amplify the voices of communities of color and other key constituencies who are disproportionately impacted by environmental issues.

Job Responsibilities

This position reports to the Development Director, is ideally based in Southeast Michigan or the Grand Rapids area, and is responsible for the following:

  • Developing and executing Michigan LCV and Michigan LCV Education Fund’s small dollar donation program, including our direct mail campaigns.
  • Setting membership growth goals, creating and implementing a plan to reach those goals through list purchasing and organic membership engagement, and tracking progress through weekly metrics.
  • Developing strategies to move current and prospective members up the ladder of engagement using online and offline tactics.
  • Organizing and segmenting all existing membership data to best steward our current members.
  • Developing creative stewardship and engagement programs for various donor types, including but not limited to recurring donors, small-dollar donors, mid-range donors, and action-takers.
  • Staying up to date on best practices and current trends in online fundraising and implementing innovative tactics to drive membership growth and fundraising.
  • Working closely with each department to ensure the best use of their data and facilitate cross-team collaboration.
  • Participating in all Michigan LCV political election work — doing the hard work of campaigning, which means volunteering yourself to do door-to-door field canvassing, text and phone banking, and attend campaign events.

Qualifications

We are seeking candidates who are experienced, strategic, creative, aware of current trends, and detail-oriented. You should have:

  • Excellent strategic-thinking, problem-solving, organizational, and time-management skills, with a proven ability to create work plans and set priorities to achieve long-term goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in small dollar fundraising, membership communications, and effectively using a CRM database.
  • Demonstrated experience in creating and implementing strategic and innovative plans in order to grow donors and action takers using both online and offline tactics.
  • A track record of managing processes, people, and deadlines necessary to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Writing and speaking skills and experience that translate into compelling pitches, effective asks, and meaningful reports to members on the impact of their contributions that reflect the mission, goals, and values of our organization.
  • Positive, solutions-oriented attitude and a commitment to maintaining a supportive, empowering culture.
  • Proficiency working with a variety of software systems, including Google Suite, Microsoft Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, and a CRM database (ideally Every Action and/or Voter Activation Network).
  • Ability to break down complex environmental issues/policy into digestible and understandable information for the general public.
  • Understanding of Michigan’s political and environmental arenas is a plus.
  • Reliable access to transportation, the internet, and a phone to use for work purposes as well as the ability to participate in campaign activities (canvassing and/or phone banking).
  • Cultural Competence:
    • Demonstrated awareness of one’s own cultural identity and the ability to learn and build on varying community norms
    • Commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture
    • Understanding of how environmental issues intersect with racism, economic and social inequality in the U.S. and has a passion for working to dismantle these systems

Salary

The starting salary for this position ranges from $64,000 - $75,000
