What will you do?
As the General Microbiologist your responsibilities may include testing and whole genome sequencing of enteric pathogens, testing of Mycobacteria for the state Tuberculosis program, and may also involve testing of select agents for the PHEP program.
Specimen testing may include:
Using conventional and molecular methods to identify and further classify a variety of pathogenic bacteria including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella, and Shigella species.
Testing pathogenic bacteria for drug resistance.
Performing Whole Genome Sequencing analysis on bacterial isolates.
Testing clinical and environmental samples for the presence of biological select agents.
Testing water for coliform bacteria.
Isolating bacterial pathogens from retail meats.
Preparing specimens for storage and delivery related to the Emerging Infections Program and Epidemiology Lab Capacity grants.

Perform routine troubleshooting, problem solving, vendor communication and software maintenance. Interpret and report serologic, molecular, and immunologic procedures that may include, but are not limited to, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, sequence-based typing, STR analysis, probe hybridization/detection, cytotoxic crossmatching, antibody screening/identification by Luminex and/or ELISA assays and other procedures as defined. Recognize testing irregularities, identify the cause, determine the solution, and resolve the problem or refer it to the appropriate level. Perform and review quality control as directed. Assist in the review and interpretation of results; prepare and may review final reports, written or electronic. Maintain, edit, and review computer and manual records to assure accurate record keeping. Maintain accurate, legible, and complete records. Maintain an orderly workspace. This is a full-time, permanent classified position and is represented by a union.
The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Public Health Division (PHD), Oregon State Public Health Laboratory (OSPHL) in Hillsboro, OR is recruiting for a General Micro Microbiologist to perform the analytical work in the isolation and identification of pathogenic microorganisms and toxins for the General Microbiology section. The General Microbiology section protects public health by providing the health division’s epidemiology staff, local health departments, other medical personnel, and emergency preparedness/response staff with information so they can respond with proper treatment of patients and any necessary control measures to prevent further spread of disease.
What will you do? As the General Micro Microbiologist, you will identify and further sub-type a variety of pathogenic bacteria by conventional and molecular methods; test samples for the presence of select agents of bioterrorism; test specimens for Mycobacterium tuberculosis using probe technology and performing susceptibilities; test specimens for blood and enteric parasites; test water for bacterial pathogens; culture food and other specimens for bacterial pathogens; and prepare specimens for storage and delivery related to the Emerging Infection Program and Epidemiology Lab Capacity grants. Additional work may also include performing tests on isolates for sub-typing using whole genome sequencing.
What are we looking for?
A bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry or a closely related field of science AND one year of clinical microbiological laboratory experience; OR a master’s degree in biology, chemistry, or a closely related field of science; OR an equivalent combination of education and clinical microbiological laboratory experience.
Preference will be given to applicants who have taken advanced courses in a biological field which demonstrates knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, practices, laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments.
Experience working as a general microbiologist in a clinical laboratory.
Experience testing for tuberculosis, blood parasites, and enteric pathogens.
Experience with molecular testing including whole genome sequencing.
Certification as a Medical Technologist is a plus.
Experience promoting a culturally competent and diverse work environment.
