Job Description

As part of the Public Works Department, an Environmental Services Equipment Operator operates a variety of solid waste collection equipment, recycling, and brush trucks to collect solid waste, recycling, brush and down trees and aid in the removal of dead animals. Emphasis of the work is on operating a large vehicle to collect solid waste in the City’s residential and business districts. Work also includes performing one or more tasks normally associated with other manual labor as required. Work occurs primarily in an outside environment in all weather conditions and includes working holidays and possibly working overtime. Work includes aiding in the repair and delivery of solid waste containers; drives and operates snowplows to remove snow and ice from city streets and parking areas. Empties refuse and recycling containers riding or walking behind trucks; operates chainsaw to cut trees. Assists with completion of work orders; maintains trucks; performs various yard work. Communicates with public to provide educational information regarding the cities refuse programs. Identifies and reports route, equipment, and safety issues. Enters route and trip data into computerized program. Conducts pre-trip inspection of truck; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; cleans equipment. Transports load to prescribed disposal areas. Employee will need knowledge of traffic laws, geographical layout of the City including streets and other arterials. Performs related work as required.

The employee should have general knowledge of practices of operating large specialty trucks and other equipment of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; of the geographical layout of the City including streets and other arterials; of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied assigned equipment; skill in the operation of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; to explain policies and procedures to citizens and businesses; to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; to respond back to work for emergencies or in support of other personnel as required; to understand and follow specific oral instructions; to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public. This is heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee is subject to noise, vibration and hazards including exposure to mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions. Employee is exposed to moving or parked vehicles, stray or loose animals, insects, broken glass and metal, and other conditions associated with solid waste collections.

Education and Experience: The position requires a High School diploma or equivalent, 1 - 4 years’ experience in the operation of heavy equipment such as a sanitation truck, dump truck, or equivalent.

Special requirements:  A valid CDL -B driver’s license, flagger, and safety training.
