Construction Maintenance Worker I/II/III

James City County Grounds Maintenance Division is hiring multiple Full Time Construction Maintenance Workers in the following sections: athletic field maintenance, park landscaping, and stormwater facility maintenance. 

Our Construction Maintenance employees work as a team to perform tasks related to the proper appearance of grounds for various facilities throughout the County. Responsible for general landscape maintenance practices and procedures including work in grass cutting, repairing turf, pruning of trees and shrubs, applying horticultural chemicals, and securing areas for public safety in emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain appearance of grounds including mowing, edging, weeding, watering, trimming, raking, and planting; maintain sidewalks and other paved areas by clearing debris; clear snow from sidewalks and make passageways around the County buildings as needed.
  • Maintain groundskeeping equipment by performing preventive and minor maintenance.
  • Assist in building maintenance, repair, renovations, and special construction projects as required.
  • Move office furniture, boxes etc. as requested.
  • (Construction Maintenance Worker II/III) Applies horticultural pesticides; operates various types of mowing equipment and small handheld powered equipment; operates one or more types of sophisticated equipment used in maintaining stormwater facilities and/or grounds maintenances areas.
  • (Construction Maintenance Worker III) Serves as Crew Lead as needed; operates heavy equipment requiring a Commercial Driver’s License; applies seed, fertilizer, and pesticides to athletic fields, roadway medians, landscaped beds and other turfgrass areas.
  • The positions are considered essential personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations.

Requirements:

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma; some experience in the methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in grounds maintenance work. Landscaping experience preferred.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Virginia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record based on James City County’s criteria.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor; operate powered grounds-keeping equipment and electric hand tools. Landscape
  • Ability to deal courteously with the public; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer service including setting and meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Work is performed outdoors under various types of weather conditions with possible exposure to hazards associated with outside maintenance.

There are three levels of Construction Maintenance Workers distinguished by the level of work performed and the qualifications of the employee.

$29,720 / year or higher DOQ

Construction Maintenance Worker II

$31,839 / year or higher DOQ

·         Must possess or be able to possess Virginia State Certification in Category 60 Registered Technician in pesticide application within 6 months of hire.

Construction Maintenance Worker III

$34,117 / year or higher DOQ

·         Must meet all requirements of a Construction Worker II

·         Must possess at a minimum a valid Class B Virginia Commercial Driver’s License.

·         Must possess or be able to possess the certificate issued for Certified Virginia fertilizer applicators within 6 months of hire.
