Job Summary

Assignments include maintenance, installation and overseeing the installation, trouble shooting and repair of traffic signal control systems and the collection and maintenance of a variety of traffic safety and statistical data.  Employees operating from the office or in the field perform tasks with limited supervision and are able and required to determine course(s) of action in resolving traffic signal operational problems with little or no instruction.  Work may be on 24-hour call standby and may be hazardous.  Work is checked periodically during progress or upon completion to insure it is conducted according to general guidelines and in conformity with accepted standards and procedures.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or G.E.D. and four (4) years experience in traffic signal installation, operation and maintenance and possession of the International Municipal Signal Association (I.M.S.A.) Level I Certification for Traffic Signal Technician or possession of a journey-level electrician’s license or certification.

 

Knowledge of:  Traffic control systems including the installation and maintenance procedures for traffic signals; the County's transportation planning processes and specific plans;

 

Ability to:  Coordinate traffic signal plans and needs with transportation planning effort; resolve traffic signal operational problems in the field; prepare written reports, and maintain logs and records of statistical data; to review land use, annexation, and related applications, drawings and plans and identify and design traffic signal systems necessary to meet legal requirements, control traffic, and meet safety requirements; monitor and maintain a parts inventory and to compute quantities and costs of supplies; follow written and oral instructions and to express ideas effectively orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective relationships with internal and external personnel.

 

Examples of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

 

Interprets layouts, electrical job assignments and procedures; operates equipment; obtains supplies; tests and measures electrical circuits; works to electrical codes and road standards as outlined by County policy or established through immediate supervisor.

 

Installs, operates, maintains and repairs traffic signal system comprised of detector units, control cabinets, overhead and underground wiring systems, concrete bases, wood, aluminum and steel structures, back guys, signal heads and lamps and light sources.

 

Installs, operates, maintains and repairs electrical control systems such as electrically-powered barricades, electrically-powered delineation systems, and interconnected changeable message signs.

Salary Grade: Local 17 Engineers.207 - Local 17 Engineers.210 $28.57 - $42.22- per hour
