Organizing Manager
Climate & Energy Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC or remote
The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. The worsening effects of climate change and persistent systemic racism make it clear: we need intersectional climate action now. But the fossil fuel industry and its money stand in the way of the progress we’re trying to make. The Climate Accountability team at the Union of Concerned Scientists works to remove Big Oil as a barrier to the just and equitable climate and energy policies we need, and the Science Hub for Climate Litigation builds greater capacity within the scientific community to conduct and communicate legally relevant research.
We’re challenging some of the most powerful and well-resourced corporations in the world, and we’re looking for an Organizing Manager to join our team.
As the Organizing Manager, you will design and implement outreach strategies and tactics; engage a network of scientists, experts, and more than half a million supporters and activists to advance our work; cultivate and maintain strategic partnerships; increase visibility of UCS research, analysis, and public-facing messages through social and traditional media channels; and supervise outreach staff.
Responsibilities
Help set high-impact campaign goals and objectives, and formulate effective plans to achieve them
Lead the campaign’s mobilization and engagement of UCS activists, experts, and donors to take action on campaign tactics, including through emails, social media, web content, webinars, and blogs
Supervise outreach staff, consultants, and/or interns and oversee their activities
Ensure transparent and equitable systems and processes for information-sharing, input-gathering, and tracking progress
Design and implement trainings for scientists—especially those from diverse and historically under-represented communities
Encourage and support the development of a community of practice among scientists doing research relevant to strategic climate litigation and fossil fuel company accountability
Represent UCS in coalitions working on similar issues, maintain existing relationships, and cultivate new relationships that will help UCS partner more effectively on issues of environmental justice and climate litigation
Work with your teammates and UCS communications staff to develop traditional and social media strategies, messages, and content for the campaign and the Science Hub for Climate Litigation.
Identify and facilitate strategic and timely response to emerging campaign opportunities; recommend and implement adjustments to campaign targeting and tactics based on changes in the movement landscape
Support organizational learning on issues of justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity
Stay informed about issues related to our work
Qualifications and Experience
Position requires:
At least 7 years of comparable and relevant experience, including at least 2 years of management experience;
Demonstrated ability and experience leading campaigns, organizing experts, designing and implementing trainings and events, building and maintaining partner relationships, and engaging supporters;
Strong project management and time management skills;
Strong skills in writing and presenting for diverse audiences; ability to manage a high volume of email communication with speed, accuracy, and professionalism; and experience with social and/or traditional media;
Strong interpersonal skills;
The ability to work both independently and in teams in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple tasks, projects, and deadlines;
Ability to advance values related to racial equity and inclusion;
Willingness to learn about our issues.
Preferred qualifications include:
Familiarity with a diverse range of allies and potential allies in climate justice, racial equity, environmental justice, corporate accountability campaigning, and/or shareholder activism;
Understanding of climate and energy issues, public interest advocacy campaigns, corporate campaigns, and opposition pushback work;
Experience building communities of practice.
Little or no exertion; may require extended periods at a computer. May occasionally lift and carry boxes of supplies or publications.
When not in a pandemic, position may require occasional overnight travel.

Assess and pursue opportunities to make progress on federal and state policies, helping to ensure alignment between the two
Meaningfully engage UCS supporters, experts, and decision-makers to advance campaign strategies and goals through online and offline advocacy, especially with diverse and historically underrepresented constituencies

Ability to work with coalition partners, especially organizations representing working-class, Latinx/Hispanic, Black, Indigenous and immigrant communities
Ability to communicate effectively with professionals who may be expert and/or prominent in their fields
Capacity to work independently, balance multiple priorities and collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team
Prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion
Preferred:
Background in climate change and energy issues
Some knowledge of the landscape around these issues in the Midwest
Experience with or interest in regulatory processes
Experience with or interest in learning about the application of science to public policy, especially on energy issues
Little or no exertion is required. May spend extended periods at a computer. May require occasional travel, approximately once per quarter.

Hitz Climate Science Fellow
TERM: 2-year post-doctoral fellowship
Climate and Energy Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Remote
Hitz Family Climate Fellowship: Climate Litigation Relevant Science
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.
UCS is seeking a candidate for the Hitz Family Climate Fellowship, a two-year postdoctoral fellowship focused on science relevant to climate litigation. Litigation, informed by robust science, has the potential to be an important tool in our work to address the impacts of, and prevent further damage from, climate change. This work will focus on advancing the science and application of climate attribution research.
This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to work with two teams at UCS: the Climate Impacts research group and the Science Hub for Climate Litigation . In collaboration with these two teams, the Fellow will produce robust and relevant climate science to inform critical societal decisions about climate change responsibility currently being addressed by the courts. The Hitz Family Climate Fellow will work with UCS colleagues to develop a proposal to address current gaps in scientific research that can inform climate litigation.
Responsibilities
The Hitz Family Climate Fellow will work with UCS staff to develop and undertake a two-year project that produces original research that helps to inform climate litigation and the organization’s climate campaign. The proposed research should: 1) address strategic gaps in research to help inform both public opinion and climate litigation; 2) produce original analysis that is inclusive of historically excluded communities; and 3) advance the science and application of climate attribution research.
Projects might include:
development of methods for climate attribution science in regions with minimal baseline climate and socioeconomic data,
new exploration into scientifically robust, real-time climate attribution research in response to emerging events, or
regional attribution studies that quantify the link between climate impacts and corporate emitters.
Qualifications and Experience
The fellowship requires a broad and in-depth knowledge of climate change, including familiarity with detection and attribution science. A scientific understanding of the connections between climate impacts and emissions from corporate actors is preferred. The ideal candidate will have an interdisciplinary research background with interest in exploring climate change related research topics. Experience with regional downscaling or regional climate modeling is required. The position requires strong quantitative and analytical skills.
Applicants will have access to discretionary funds to support research efforts while at UCS. The fellow will be supported to conduct research, share results with a broad audience of stakeholders, and fulfill other professional development needs.
The position requires a PhD in a climate science related field.
Proficiency in languages other than English is preferred, but not required. Familiarity with and skills in public speaking—or a willingness to acquire these skills through in-house training–are strongly preferred.
The fellow may need to spend extended periods at computer. Regular office hours may include occasional nights and weekends. Periodic travel to events, conferences, speaking engagements, and other UCS offices may be required.
UCS is an equal opportunity employer actively seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities.
Details:
This is a remote, 2-year full-time position. Fellowship will begin fall 2022. Science Fellowship salaries follow a fixed structure based on years of post-Ph.D. experience. UCS offers excellent benefits and a rewarding work environment.
Information about the organization is available at http://www.ucsusa.org .
Comparable training and/or experience can be substituted for degrees when appropriate.

Full time
Hitz Climate Science Fellow

The CJEO will engage, listen to, and elevate people and ideas across UCS. The CJEO will be a sought-after partner, mentor, and advisor, and an accessible, frontline source of ideas and information for staff, senior leaders, and the Board.

The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war.
UCS is accepting applications for a Senior Campaign Coordinator to join our Climate and Energy team. In this role, you will work with a team that focuses on modernizing the U.S. electric grid without leaving anyone behind and facilitating a transition to renewable energy, away from burning fossil fuels that disproportionately affect the health and well-being of low-income communities and communities of color. UCS is committed to enacting policies that create a just and equitable transition to a renewable energy future, and to broadening and diversifying the voices shaping energy decisions. As Senior Campaign Coordinator, you would help further these efforts.
The ideal candidate will have experience in advocacy and working in partnership with communities, and an interest in working on climate justice and energy issues. You will also help support locally-focused UCS work in Midwestern states.
Responsibilities
Working with Midwest and government affairs teams, develop and implement outreach and advocacy plans to advance equitable state and federal legislative and regulatory campaign initiatives, with particular focus on the Midwest
Contribute to federal, regional, and state agency advocacy efforts, including assessing political and coalition partner dynamics
Create and coordinate comments, letters, and testimony for legislative and regulatory proceedings
Build relationships and coordinate campaign work with allies in key regions, including environmental justice and community organizations
Represent UCS positions in meetings with state and federal legislators and staff, agencies, and other stakeholders
Support organizational learning on issues of justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity
Stay informed about clean energy and grid modernization technology and policy, as well as effective outreach strategies for influencing campaign targets
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires five years of comparable and relevant experience, including at least 3 years of organizing and advocacy experience
Experience planning and implementing effective advocacy campaigns and strong project management experience
Ability to work with coalition partners, especially organizations representing working-class, Latinx/Hispanic, Black, Indigenous, and immigrant communities

Kendall Fellowship: Science for Environmental Justice Center for Science and Democracy Union of Concerned Scientists Location: Flexible, within the US
The Position
The Center for Science and Democracy (CSD) at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), the leading science-based organization at the center of today’s most exciting and important policy debates, seeks outstanding candidates for the Science for Environmental Justice Kendall Fellowship. This up to two-year fellowship is open to candidates who will have completed their Ph.D. by December 2021.
You will develop approaches to the analysis of equity and justice implications in federal regulatory actions. This work will be part of our Science for Environmental Justice campaign. A critical part of the research we envision is the applications of methods for bringing the experiences and views of impacted, overburdened low-income, Black, Indigenous and communities of color into the analysis of public health, safety, and environmental threats and the expected impacts of regulatory measures in addressing longstanding justice and equity challenges.
The Union of Concerned Scientists is an independent national nonprofit whose scientists and engineers work to solve some of our planet’s most pressing environmental and safety problems. UCS combines technical analysis and effective organizing and advocacy to create innovative, practical solutions for stemming the tide of global warming, sustainable food policy and agriculture, clean energy and transportation, and reducing the threat of catastrophic nuclear war.
The Center for Science and Democracy, UCS’s newest program, will host this Kendall Fellow. The Center works across issues to strengthen the role of independent science in democratic dialogue and public policy by improving the process of bringing science into policy-making, pushing back on misinformation efforts and attacks on scientists, and increasing public access to scientific information.
Responsibilities
The Kendall Fellow will work with UCS staff to develop a proposal for a two-year project to bring the voices, lived experience, and perspectives of people and communities most impacted but often excluded from the regulatory process. The proposed research should: 1) analyze the processes that need to be changed and updated; 2) develop recommendations for needed changes, in partnership with grassroots organizations fighting for environmental justice, and 3) help our advocacy campaign for science-based regulatory decision-making that is just and equitable. Three possible topics of this research, depending upon applicant interest, that may shape the research proposal, are:
Agency engagement with the public and incorporation of public input in decision-making: How is community input being brought into regulatory science, what are the barriers to engagement, and what are the levers for improving those opportunities? What processes exist for utilizing community input as agencies develop health and safety protections? What are some successful models for incorporating environmental justice concerns into rulemaking processes? How do agencies measure the impacts of rules on communities? How well are agencies incorporating community science into decision-making processes?
Scientific analysis with an equity and justice framework: Are agencies considering science in regulatory actions that adequately address environmental justice concerns including cumulative impacts of exposure to multiple pollutants? How are agencies incorporating lived experience as data? What gaps exist in environmental hazard monitoring and data collection generally and how does that limit agency’s regulatory responsiveness to communities?
Data accessibility: How can federal agencies improve access to data and information to support communities’ right to know and ability to advocate for evidence-based solutions?
The detailed products of the fellowship will be defined during the development of the proposal but could include analytical, educational, and advocacy products; peer-reviewed publications; partnership development with grassroots organizations; and policy recommendations.
Qualifications and experience
The fellow should possess significant knowledge of environmental justice issues, regulatory science assessments, and mixed-method research. The fellow should be able to demonstrate research experience that can be applied to the stated goals of the fellowship, specifically on the challenge of environmental justice. In addition, strong written and verbal skills are required and the ability to work in both Spanish and English is preferred. At a minimum, a Ph.D. in a relevant field must be completed before December 31, 2022
The fellow may spend extended periods at the computer. Occasional travel may be required (several overnight trips per year).
UCS is an equal opportunity employer continually seeking to diversify its staff. In particular, we’re dedicated to broadening opportunities for individuals from demographic groups that are historically underrepresented in the sciences and in environmental advocacy. We’re also committed to building an inclusive workplace culture where talented people of widely diverse backgrounds can thrive. We've adopted this commitment because we believe the inclusion of culturally diverse perspectives will improve our work and produce better societal and environmental outcomes for all, including historically disenfranchised communities. We are actively seeking people who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
About the Kendall Science Fellows Program
The Kendall Science Fellows Program was established to honor Nobel Prize-winning physicist Henry Kendall who was with UCS from our beginnings and was the long-time chair of our board. Kendall was known for his unique ability to shake up the status quo and catalyze new thinking, and UCS looks to Kendall Fellows to do the same. Priority is given to innovative and forward-looking proposals that are primarily scientific, technical, or analytic in nature but also show interest in the application of science to policy. Fellows will benefit from the opportunity to learn from the UCS approach to science and policy, and UCS will benefit from the new approaches and expertise of the Kendall Fellows.

Global Security Program Director
Global Security Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Washington, DC
The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists seeks a creative and forward-thinking leader with a visionary, broad, and interdisciplinary approach to serving as the next director of the Global Security Program.
Since its founding in 1969, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has advanced its mission of using rigorous, independent science to solve some of our planet's most pressing problems and improve people's lives. Joining with people across the country and leading with science, UCS's staff of nearly 225 dedicated professionals – including scientists, analysts, policy, outreach, and communication experts – combine science, technical analysis, and effective advocacy to create innovative, practical, and equitable solutions for a healthy, safe and sustainable future. Central to that mission is addressing one of the most serious and existential threats to life on Earth – nuclear weapons.
UCS’s Global Security Program (GSP) has a unique role in fundamentally reforming U.S. policy at a time when the risks posed by nuclear weapons are real and increasing. With its unique combination of science, technical analysis, advocacy, outreach, and communications capacity, UCS and the next director of GSP can help shape discussion and advance policies that limit the threat of nuclear war, curtail dangerous and unnecessary spending on the nuclear arsenal, build public support for policies that reduce these risks, address the environmental, health and cultural harms of nuclear weapons activities and profoundly change a system that puts the fate of the world in the hands of a few.
The new director of the GSP will have the opportunity to re-envision the program's work, strategies, and staffing resources and engage in the advocacy needed to make a change in U.S. nuclear weapons policy, serving as a subject matter expert in arms control and nuclear weapons policy. The new director will be expected to champion and integrate efforts around justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in program mission-focused work externally and within internal operations. In addition, the director will inspire financial support by proactively creating and sharing a compelling vision for the Global Security Program to engage funders of all types.
We are actively seeking candidates who bring diverse backgrounds and perspectives to join us in this work.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will bring a broad knowledge of nuclear arms control and international security issues, including U.S. legislative and policy-making processes, and familiarity with the role of various agencies in the national security policy arena. In addition to subject matter expertise, candidates will bring a strong interest in and demonstrated experience in program and staff management. They will be a strong collaborator and work with other UCS programs that engage on issues related to nuclear power. A thorough understanding of how to engage in issue advocacy is also required. As an external face for this work, the ideal candidate will have demonstrated the ability to interact with a broad array of audiences, particularly in the scientific, arms control, and policy communities, and the credibility that comes with a substantial track record of achievement. The new director must bring a strong commitment to fully incorporating justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) goals and strategies into UCS’s global security work and to supporting and engaging constituencies whose voices and perspectives have been absent or marginalized in national security policy debates, as well as those who are directly impacted by nuclear activities and policies.
All applications, nominations, and inquiries are invited. Applications should include, as separate documents, a CV or resume and a letter of interest addressing the themes in the leadership profile, available at www.wittkieffer.com .

Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC
Campaign Organizer
Climate & Energy Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Cambridge, MA or Washington, DC
The Position
The worsening effects of climate change and persistent systemic racism make it clear: we need intersectional climate action now. But the fossil fuel industry and its money stand in the way of the progress we’re trying to make. The Climate Accountability team at the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) works to remove Big Oil as a barrier to the just and equitable climate and energy policies we need. We’re challenging some of the most powerful and well-resourced corporations in the world, and we’re looking for a Campaign Organizer to join our team.
As the Campaign Organizer, you will mobilize scientists, experts, and a network of over half a million supporters and activists to support our campaigns; coordinate with key coalitions and networks; help develop and maintain strategic partnerships; and increase the visibility of UCS research, analysis, and public-facing messages through social and traditional media channels. The ideal candidate will be able to develop and implement outreach plans and activities to advance our team’s goals.
Responsibilities
Conceive of, develop, and implement outreach tactics to further Climate Accountability Campaign goals, in coordination with team leaders
Mobilize UCS activists, experts, and donors to take online and offline action on campaign tactics, including through emails, social media, web content, webinars, and blogs
Represent UCS in coalitions working on similar issues, maintain existing relationships and cultivate new relationships, including with partners who work in Spanish, that will help UCS partner more effectively on issues of environmental and climate justice.
Work with your teammates and UCS communications staff to develop and implement local, state, regional, trade, and social media strategies in both English and Spanish for the campaign
Participate in events and conferences to promote UCS
Plan and facilitate events, including webinars and briefings for target constituencies, decision-makers, and the media; subject matter convenings; training for UCS supporters; and UCS receptions
Recruit and engage experts and supporters (both English and Spanish speaking) for the campaign, especially among diverse and historically underrepresented communities
Support organizational learning on issues of justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity
Stay informed about issues related to the Accountability campaign and other UCS work
Qualifications and Experience
Position requires:
3-5 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years at a comparable level;
Experience with grassroots organizing and online and offline mobilization tools;

Full time
Campaign Organizer
3-5 years of relevant experience, including at least 2 years at a comparable level;
Experience with grassroots organizing and online and offline mobilization tools;
Strong skills in writing and presenting for diverse audiences;
Significant self-motivation, strong time management, excellent administrative and organizational skills, careful attention to detail, and interpersonal skills;

Union of Concerned Scientists
Boston, Massachusetts
Climate and Energy Program
Union of Concerned Scientists
Washington, DC, Cambridge, MA or Chicago, IL
The Position
The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is an independent national nonprofit that uses science to protect our health, safety, and environment. We are scientists, engineers, economists, activists, and everyday people who develop and advocate for innovative, practical solutions to some of our planet’s most pressing problems—from combating global warming and developing sustainable ways to feed, power, and transport ourselves, to fighting misinformation, advancing racial equity, and reducing the threat of nuclear war. Working at UCS means advancing solutions and advocating for policies which are backed by the best data, research, and technical expertise.
At this pivotal point in the climate crisis, it’s time for bold action—and a swift and just transition to a clean-energy economy. The Union of Concerned Scientists is accepting applications for a Senior Energy Analyst who will help realize this vision, using data-driven approaches to inform and engage policymakers to modernize our electric grid, and create real change.
At UCS, we’re excited about the unprecedented opportunities ahead: with dramatic progress in renewable energy and energy storage, the potential to expand and upgrade energy transmission and distribution systems, and the emergence of strong options for electrifying buildings and transportation. We’re committed to enacting policies that create a just and equitable transition to a renewable energy future, and to broadening and diversifying the voices shaping energy decisions. As a Senior Energy Analyst, you would help drive this effort. You will help lead research and advocacy efforts to shape energy markets and policies to modernize the US electric grid and facilitate the transition away from dirty fossil fuels that disproportionately affect the health and well-being of low-income communities and communities of color.
Responsibilities
Conducting research and analysis and providing technical insights in support of UCS energy campaigns on various legislative, regulatory, and market initiatives affecting the electric industry and a modernized power grid.
Writing reports and other materials appropriate to their intended audiences highlighting the results of various analyses.
Helping to define and advance UCS policy positions and strategy to successfully influence desired regulatory and legislative outcomes.
Supporting UCS justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts by conducting analyses and recommending policy approaches to foster inclusiveness, deliver greater benefits to underserved communities, and reduce exposure to negative health and environmental impacts from a clean energy transition, and by providing a supportive and welcoming environment that addresses the needs of diverse sets of stakeholders.
Working with our campaign team to help plan, coordinate, and implement strategies, tactics, and projects that persuade regulators and policymakers to make decisions in line with UCS desired goals and preferred solutions.
Developing and delivering comments and testimony before national and state regulatory commissions, legislative committees, other government agencies and commissions, and market operators.
This may include market rules and rate structures, transmission and distribution planning, reliability impacts, and the integration and expansion of clean energy technologies—such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy storage, microgrids, demand response, and distributed generation—onto the grid.
Establishing and maintaining alliances with advocates, environmental and energy justice organizations and community leaders, clean energy businesses, academics, and researchers at government agencies, to exchange information and resources, advance shared objectives, and engage in collaborative projects.
Serving as a UCS spokesperson on energy and grid-related issues in hearings, conferences, workshops, stakeholder negotiations, and other public forums, and writing regular posts for the UCS blog to contribute to campaign goals and provide an expert viewpoint.
Working with our media team to develop messages for key aspects of our climate and energy work.
Giving media print, radio, and TV interviews, and writing LTEs and op-eds about issues related to your expertise.
Supporting fundraising efforts by contributing to proposals and reports and meeting with potential donors.
Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
The position requires seven to ten years of comparable and relevant experience, including background in electricity markets, energy analysis and advocacy, climate, and energy policy development—with emphasis on renewable energy and power grids—and a master’s degree. Other requirements are:
Strong and demonstrated research, technical, and analytic skills.
Strong skills in project management, public contact, and policy negotiation.
Excellent writing and public speaking skills, specifically the ability to convey technical issues to policymakers, advocates, media, and the issue public.
Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a deep commitment to advancing these values.
Experience in energy regulatory agencies and regional power market design and governance processes, familiarity with regulatory processes and rulemakings, and facility with writing regulatory comments and testifying are a plus, but not required.
Little or no exertion required. May spend extended periods at the computer.
